Sigs will do a day's a work, I'm an H&K man myself...although recently I been having "feelings" for a P226 Navy
Well....HKs are nice guns too, that's for sure. So is that 226 Navy. I'm a small guy however, and I tend towards small guns. I've got a pair of 229s. (One in .40, one in .357 Sig) and I've got my eye on a 239 in 9mm.

I have a certain respec for Sigs. I fired both Sig and H&K before getting the H&K because they're both conidered some of the best. The Sig felt better in my hand, but I shot better with the H&K. And then there's the fact the Federal Air Marshalls can select from H&K or Sig in the .40 or .357.

I hear ya, dude. I've got the opposite problem, I'm a big guy (6'5", 245 lbs.), so many "compact" pistols are just too small in my hands...my relatively-new USP Compact in 9mm took a while to get used to because of this size issue. Anyhow, for some reason, I'm just in love  with that P226 Navy even though another 9mm is the last weapon I need right now!

In addition to the USP Compact in 9mm, I've got a USP 45 and a Beretta 92FS. I've held/shot Sigs before and liked them (despite the fact that I've always only owned guns with manual safeties in the past), so I figure I'll "take the plunge" with a P226 Navy.

Mr. Heckler and Mr. Koch, please forgive me for my infidelity!

I feel exactly the same way, Hoss. Nothing at all against Sig Arms, but H&K's unambiguous lifetime warranty really pushed me toward H&K. Sig's website advertises a limited lifetime warranty, but all of the warranty information I've seen first-hand in Sig operator manuals states that it's a one-year warranty. :?: What gives?

I gotta tell ya, as a 5'11" man at 265 lbs I'm no small dude. I was a little iffy about the Ultra. I found that when using the mag that comes with it, my grip is a little compacted by the forward extension of the buttplate.

I replaced it with a few KimPro TacMags. They come with a short and long buttplate. Put the long buttplates on that mount flush with the front of the grip, and voila! A good grip on a small gun for a man with large hands.

O.K. so I liked it enough I absolutely had to find the solution. And for only $30 a piece...simple solution.

I dunno what gives, but I can confirm that my owner's manuals do claim only the one year warranty. I've also heard complaints about Sig's warranties before, so your mileage may vary. As for me, as many rounds as I put through my guns, if they have any problems, I'm convinced they'll show up in under a year, so it's not particularly important to me.

Seriously though....The warranty issues that I've heard about, I took into account, and in the end, decided I liked the guns enough to take the risk.

Makes sense to me. Warranty issues aside, I seriously doubt that a new P226 Navy would prove to be a problematic weapon...afterall, this is one of the many weapons the SEALS allegedly use. Furthermore, as you suggested, any issues that quality guns may have are bound to show up early on, if ever.

My dad trained me to "break in" all pistols with 300-400 rounds of the strongest ammo that the design can stand, that way you know right off the bat whether the weapon will endure hard use. Accordingly, when I first shot my USP9C, I used 350 rounds of 9mm NATO FMJ ammo for the very first range trip with that weapon. The 9mm NATO round is significantly hotter than commercial 9mm FMJ, and would be considered a +P round. Alas, The USP9C stood up like a champ, with no hiccups whatsoever. ;-)

I'm gonna go ahead, and give Sig a try despite this warranty issue.

Congratulations on your decision to preserve the 1911 handed down by your grandfather. I hope you can shoot it just often enough to keep it cleaned and lubed and see to it that it is in the same condition for your grandson. Teach him respect for a family heirloom, (and be sure snd save back some ammunition for them) and your grandson will still be able to hand down a perfectly designed handgun to his grandson.

oh, congrats on the Kimber too

I've never understood the fascination with the 1911. At least as the end all be all of pistols. They are pretty guns, for sure. But something you stake your life on? I guess I've heard a lot of bad stories. One time I rented a Kimber at the DFW gun range and it jammed a couple of times. I think that was more due to not being cleaned properly than anything else.

Besides, you have to really think about the 1911 that you're buying. Some manufacturers are better than others. There are many custom gunsmiths out there making them. If I buy a Glock .45, then I know it will work. With the 1911, I'm not so sure. I don't know enough about them and don't have the time to devote. I've often admired the Para Ordnance, but have heard that it's not a good gun. Well, it costs almost a grand, so why would I pay that much for something that's not that great?

I'm not trying to start a war or anything...the first pistol I ever admired was a 1911. It was a picture in the dictionary at my grade school in Chilicothe, Texas. I always wanted one. Yes, my love of guns goes that far back. I definitely would buy one, but I just don't know that I would carry one. I'm pretty sure that my Glock will always work. I'm positive that my revolver will work.

My 1911 compulsion began the moment I finally mustered up enough gumption to pull the trigger on my Grandfather's gun. By the time I had put 50 rounds through it, I had to get another box....and another...and another. After 200 rounds and not a single failure.....

I thaught to myself, "Man, Grandpa's gun is 88 years old, and shoots like that?". "Ah man....that means I'm a 1911 fan now." "How do I break it to Marlene? (my H&K)" Yeah, I name my guns....
