I guess I'll chime in since, unfortunately, I work security. First, I agree that the deceased was wrong to steal in the first place. Second, the loss prevention were also in the wrong. The amount of force was unnecessary. The merchandise that was taken isn't worth all of the effort or the potential law suit. Follow the guy to the parking lot and if possible get description of vehicle and license plate. Then call the police with all of the collected information.

Our main job is to observe, report, and document. There aren't many security guards that are trained in the proper use of force. Besides, for what we get paid, it just isn't worth it.

Fortunately I work in house security for a private business and we don't have any of these type of issues.
