I carry Winchester Ranger in my .45
Speer Gold Dot in my .38 spl.
XM193 in my AR-15
and I stagger 88gr JHP and FMJ in my .380 (But I'd recommend a 9mm over the .380)
Winchester Ranger, Speer Gold Dot, and Federal Tactical are all very good brands. There are others that are good as well:

Just make sure whatever you carry in your gun runs reliably.
I consider premium ammo to be one of the most cost effective upgrades you can get. In 9mm/.40cal/.45 Winchester Ranger makes holes about 3 times the size of the equivalent FMJ

Well, you already have plenty of opinions.... but I'd like to welcome you to the forums. Good to see another local in here.Mithras61 wrote:I'm trying to decide what type of rounds to carry. I grew up shooting, buut never worried too much about what rounds, because FMJ seemed like the best all-around choice. I haven't done much shooting in the last 20 years, though, and the choices of load seem to have multiplied. I chatted with my father, and he carries FMJ because of where he lives (northern WI) and he wants to be able to hit the BG even if BG ducks behind a wall or around the corner. He lives a good 30 minutes from police assistance on the good days, so he feels the burden more than some folks, he says. He learned to shoot in USMC back in the 50s, and I wonder if that colors his feelings on the subject, so I ask:
What loads do you carry, and why? The options seem to be FMJ, JHP, safety slugs, Hydrashok, Golden sabres, and more, so I find myself wondering where to even start looking for good and reliable info.

That, IMHO, is the key. Something that feeds reliably according to your weapon of choice (small caliber to cannon), and whether or not something you do might influence the POI. As a way of example - most glocks will go bang with anything, but some folks have had a problem (esp. with the G36) with FTE. Ditto on Berettas. Some loads are heavy and kick hard and folks anticipate it so much they pull (push) off POA. You gotta find the right, personalized, combination that you have absolutely, positively, got every confidence in. Kinda like my old Ford PU.Paladin wrote:Just make sure whatever you carry in your gun runs reliably.

I Agree with Paladin also.
Shoot what you plan on using to make sure it works in YOUR gun!
I bought some Double Tap ammo (Hoo,Hoo, More Power, Ung!) It has more power! BUT I had problems with it jamming in my Glock 27. It worked fine in a SIG P239 and a SIG P229.
Speer Gold Dot JHP and Remington Golden Saber JHP have been flawless for me, so I use them. (40 S&W)
In 9mm I carry Cor-Bon +P 115gr. JHP.
I carry something chambered for 357SIG alot. I use Speer Gold Dot JHP. My spare mag. is loaded with S&B 147gr. FMJ. My reasoning is that by the time I get to the spare mag. I might need something that will penetrate a barrier. Or if I need something that will penetrate a barrier and I have time, I can change mags.
Another good tip, or better, a necessity is: Carry a spare mag. You might not need 20+ bullets but you could have a magazine failure at any time.
Welcome aboard, regards, OE

Right now in my XD-45 I carry Hornady's 230 gr +P, TAP-FFD with a muzzle (fps)/Energy (ft-lbs) of 950/461.
It's on this page:

Black Talons are not illegal they just had bad press. I believe they stopped making them because of the all the bad press.robert_de_niro wrote:I carry a H&K P2000 .40 loaded with some nasty little 165gr Winchester SXPs, basically the legal version of the black talons. They musroom quickly and stay in the target well. They're pretty hot too...
If only they were as effective as their reputation. Armor piercing with an inate ability to kill cops. Even the name sounds evil.
The Ammunition I use is: Personal Pefence 124 grain Hydra-Shok. not quite as menacing sounding, and more politically correct.

Here is the Test I stated to in my post, they tested Golden sabres, HST ,and SXT (talon) the study was for LEO in Washington St. and its a bit bias toward the Federal ammo but you can tell it was a good true test for all three. it includes 9mm 40 S&W ,45 ACP
I will let you draw your own ideas from it .

its only there to show where I got my ideas on carrying the SXT in my Personal protection gun.

Re: What ammo load do you carry, and why?
Well, right now the .38 is loaded with Gold Dot, while the .380, 9mm, and .45 are all loaded with Golden Sabers.Mithras61 wrote:What loads do you carry, and why? The 38 is the only one I have a preference on, and that's either for Gold Dot or wadcutters, as I doubt some other hollowpoints would open up as well as the rather bucketlike critters in there.
Gold Dot in semiauto calibers seems to be much closer to hardball in profile, so I use Golden Sabers and Gold Dots pretty much interchangeably there. In fact, as I recall, my spare 9mm mags are full of cheap Remington UMC JHPs because I ran low on 9mm Golden Sabers.
For that matter, I just realized that there's another spare mag of .45ACP 230gr Hydrashoks sitting here. I guess if it comes down to spare mags, the BGs will just have to take whatever I manage to lay my hands on. Of course, if it happens right here, the .38 is just buying me time to get out of the chair and take one big step to cover and a 12ga.
