this is how i taught my daughter to shoot with both eyes open:
hold your strong hand out, arm extended, thumb up. focus on the thumb nail. with both eyes open, move the arm to target positions (the tv, a lamp, etc.) always keep your focus on the thumb and both eyes open. if you see the thumb double, you should move it slightly toward the dominant eye side. once you can raise the thumb and focus properly (single picture) start aligning it with targets. always follow the thumb as you should your front sight.
once you master this, switch to an EMPTY GUN!!!!!!!!!!!! and transfer this to the front sight. always focusing on the front sight and align the target with it.
you have to teach yourself to keep both eyes open while focusing with your dominant eye. this is the easiest way i have found to teach this and it has worked teaching many shooters.

I'll have to work on this. I have always shot with one eye closed (except when using a laser). When I try your method, either my thumb doubles up or the target does. I'll work on it. Thanks for the info.

I'm right there with ya texjames, started way young shooting rifles right handed with dominate right eye open and left eye closed. Later in life I tried to learn to shoot shotguns, skeet, trap, and game with both eyes open and it just don't work for me. Besides I can generally hold my own when shooting and hunting with a crowd so why try to fix something that ain't broke too bad.

I hear this sentiment allot, shooting one eye closed makes it easier to focus and does not cost you anything in accuracy. What it will do is slow down your target acquisition and limit your situational awareness.

As for those who say getting a good sight picture is too slow, and impractical, I would suggest modifying your draw so that as you're punching out you are finding the front sight, and not waiting until your weapon is always presented. Here's a video showing the four count draw that will allow you to do this. The only modification I make when teaching is differentiating his fourth step into two steps; the first being bringing the weapon to centerline and establishing a solid two hand grip, and the second being punching straight out while acquiring the front post.
