Yes, that is the reason I like mine so much. It is rough and ugly already so I don't feel a need to worry too much about hurting it. My 10/22 is a different story. At shooting ranges I stand up to shoot with it for fear of scratching it on the rest...I can't even enjoy shooting it because I am so scared I will defect it in the slightest way.

I don't think mine was part of that stockpile they found. It is in good shape but the blue is worn off in some places and the stock has a lot of nicks in it. It is a true masterpiece though.

Wasn't the AK design based on the MP43/44?

Predecessor, but not ancestor. Different designer (Simonov), and completely different design.

Five bucks if you can say, or spell, what the first "S" in "SKS" stands for without looking it up. Me, I can't even spell "Colt" so I'd have no chance at it...

Samozaryadnyi Karabin Systemi Simonova, thats russian for self-loading simonov carbine. Or, Самозарядный карабин системы Симонова.

Do I get bonus points for spelling it in Cyrillic?

That Russian Alphabet sure is strange looking....I would never want to leanr a language in which I would also have to memorize a new alphabet. I tried to learn spanish and it was hard enough, It has english lettering too.

What gets me is when I did some research a lot of websites call it "assault rifle". I dislike that term...the problem is it was not actually "defined" until 30 or so years (at least) after it's creation.
The story I hear is that "sturm gewher" (German for assault rifle) was supposedly made by Hitler to describe the MP 43/44 and was not defined at the time since there were really only a few "assault rifles" and they looked very different from other guns of the time period and were therefor easy to identify so actually standards to be considered a "sturm gewher" were not developed. By the time people actually started trying to make up standards in the later 20th century there were so many different kinds and guns that looked similar that several definitions survive today...many of which have an agenda behind them. Has anyone else heard of this?

I have seen these on several websites and they do have some appeal to me.

My concearns are that on an evaluation report someone said that he bought a stock that messed the gun up and that stock simply did not work on his SKS even though it was supposedly correct, this may have been a shipping mix up but I still am worried.

I am also do not completely like the idea of spending 70 or 80usd on a stock for a gun that only cost 120usd.

Have you used one of these personally? If you have and think they are worth the money I will definitely consider one.

Wait until you get into collecting milsurp rifles, and spend more for a "correct" bayonet than you spent for the rifle that it fits.

Seriously... I've got a few rifles where the complete and correct bayo, scabbard, and frog would cost double what the rifle cost.

I don't look at that as a negative, I just think it's proof that I got a great deal on the rifles.

There's also the old standard for scopes: "never spend less on a scope than you spent on the gun". It's true, although on some bargain guns I've spent 2-3 times the cost for a decent scope and mounting setup.

Wow, that ammo IS pricey. I couldn't afford 1,000 rounds with my tiny sum of only 150usd. I bought 500 rounds of SP Russian Ammo for 90usd plus sales tax. Brown Bear brand. I also got a pack of 20 stripper clips for 5usd. I went home and (making sure the SAFETY was on and the muzzle was pointed in a SAFE direction AND leaving the action open the ENTIRE time), practiced loading with stripper clips. I found it hard at first. I found it easier by starting with 3 roudns in the clip, loading, unloading and then adding one more round each time I reloaded the clip. When I got to the full ten it was as easy as cutting through butter with a hot bayonet.(Aren't I funny?) :smilelol5:

I hope to take it to the range within the next week, that is if I don't have a bullet pop through our roof and kill me on new years... :???: (Idiots shooting in the air, when will they learn?)

Has anyone tried this ammo before? I hope it is good since I have plenty of it.

WheySmart , in case you didnt know, the Yugoslavian's did not chrome their barrels so keep it oiled well on the inside. Speaking of that, anyone got suggestions on what to put on the barrels that would work better than oil?

Those are nice. For 120usd I had the option of getting an SKS or a Nagant Carbine like yours. The SKS was semi-auto and better for plinking and the Nagant had a pretty poorly done finish on it. (Didn't even look original.) So, I got the SKS. I will post a picture of it later today, I have to go dip water out of a hole...

p99guy, I like that M1938. It balances better than the M44, but I guess it recoils a bit worse, without the bayonet for weight.
