For a 1911 on a budget the Rock Island which is made in the Philippines is a pretty good deal at about $325 or so (compact is a little more) is a good choice. I bought one thinking that at that price it would strictly be a range gun, wouldn't trust it as a carry gun. After about 800 rds with not a single failure after the first two magazines, I now have enough confidence in it to use it for carry.

Thanks, I was wondering about Rock Island and how good they are....I thought I saw them at Cheaper Than Dirt, I'll look around.

Another sub $400 1911 is the Firestorm 45 Government model (not an exact gi clone because grips are not interchangable but important working parts ie slide, barrel, mag are). I use mine for IDPA and have over 2000 rounds through it since March and only problems have been either my overlong ammo or some limp wristing I corrected.

Slide to frame fit is compariable to Kimber custom, already has all the ergonomics changes I would add like beaver tail grip safety.
Reasonable gun control is hitting your target with the first shot.
