first pistol for my son? opinions welcome

2 years ago I took my then 8 yo daughter who at the time was 4'2" and about 75lbs to the range to shoot her new Marlin 60 and if she wanted my M&P AR-15. I took along my XD .40 and my wife's Sig Mosquito (yes, it's the pink one). She had been versed for over a year ad nauseum while starting her out on a Crossman pump master BB gun concerning gun safety, proper breathing techniques, muzzle location and trigger control to the range for some fun plinking. When she got to shooting the Mosquito she was VERY accurate and LOVED everything about it. It was a little big for her but she compensated by bench resting it on a sand bag. I'm sure now that she is almost 6" taller and about 15lbs heavier it would be much more easily handled with or without the rest. They're relatively inexpensive, pretty darn accurate, they have one in all black and it's shooter friendly once you get past the finicky break in period.

Just another suggestion but I'm sure whatever he gets he will have a lot of fun hanging with his Dad making amazing memories that will last a lifetime.

Older 3 screw Ruger Single Six. Have 2 late 50's model with both cylinders. Grest guns with relatively small grips for young hands. My oldest which is almost 11 shoots it better than I ever could and knows exactly what guns can do if not treated with respect. My youngest which is 4 has only seen his, it has a nice little corner of the safe where it sits waiting on that special day.

I got it! Picked-up the Ruger Mark III Standard .22 with three magazines for $240.00 today. My son and I celebrated and went to Shoot Smart. We put about 250 rounds through it and 150 through the M&P. He did great.

Excellent choice!

I know a lot of people hate the disassembly reassembly of the mk iii's. I think it's overblown. It just has a couple of "tricks" in the process. Once you know them, I don't think it's much more difficult than, say a 1911 or ar-15.

Find a good video on youtube the first time. Watch it once before you do it for real. Do it for real while referring to the video as needed. Then dissassemble and reassemble 5 or 10 times in a row and you'll likely never have a problem.

This coming from a person that bought a used mk ii, used, sans manual. This was before internet. Ended up taking it back ftp the shop I bought it from in a paper bag in pieces. After I did it a few times, never had an issue.

I bought each one of my grandchildren a S&W Model 63 or 34, Four inch six shot .22lr revolver (Kit Gun).
I bought them over the years and each one learned to shoot a revolver with it.
Several of the older ones shoot 1911s, Browning HPs, Glocks and larger Revolvers now, but they all learned on the Kit Guns.
They also shoot rifles and shotguns and are hunters.

All 9 of my Grandchildren are Shooters. They are part of the Gun Culture and a good students and citizens.
