Plano Bullet Trap - off range - lectured about not securing

I shoot at BT also and believe it is just thier policy (see signs at entrance). So I do not go in or out with a loaded or holstered weapon. I figure I can make it the 20 feet to my truck to do so there in relative privacy.

You guys will have to tell me if I am missing something here...

What is the big deal with loading and holstering your weapon at the gun range? Don't those of you who have CHLs ALWAYS carry your guns? What is different at the range? I am just a little unsure at why this is such a big deal. And for those of you who support this "sanction"...why? What is so different than YOU carrying your weapon on a daily basis, or hanging out with people who carry their weapon? What is the risk involved at the range?? I am totally baffled on this one...

Not quite the same scenario as Bullet Trap, but at Carter's Country in Spring, they want to check your handgun as you come INTO the store, and they tag it (with a small paper stickytag) after "inspection" (which basically consists of looking at the gun and ensuring it's unloaded). This requires you to unload/disarm in the parking lot (or CC a handgun you aren't shooting).

Of course, they don't inspect anything on the way OUT (it's an outdoor range), so I typically reload and reholster ON the line as I leave...

Hmm, I don't get it. That seems ridiculous to me. Maybe I'm the weird one!!!

Then again, I never go to indoor ranges. I just don't get the airport security they apparently have at these gun ranges.

Maybe sometime. I do live in Smithville, but I work in Austin in one of the office parks off of Mopac. Unfortunately, it's not handy for me to shoot in Austin these days because my workplace has one of those stupid "no guns on company property" rules. This includes the parking area, and in the office park there is no other place to park EXCEPT on company property.

A couple of years ago we used to be off St. Elmo. Street parking was readily available,so I routinely kept my carry gun in my car and brought guns, ammo, etc. with me if I wanted to go to Red's.

But it's not worth risking my job on even the SLIM chance that the gun could make itself known - say if my car was broken into and I had to make a police report. So for now I don't bring anything into Austin on my daily commutes.

Call your state rep and tell them to push SB534 on to the House calendar. That's the "worker's protection bill" that will put an end to these stupid rules and restore our private property rights.

Once in a while I shoot IDPA at that place in the next county over (to the west). I'll send you a PM if you think you might want to try that.

This weekend, it's the state Indoor Championships up in Amarillo.

I took my CHL class there a while back and they're very pro-carry. I've gone in before with only my carry piece concealed and when they asked what I was shooting, I told them ....."A .45". They looked around and I told them, "Don't worry, I've got it here........" They simply said, "OK" and gave me a lane and targets. I always load back up on the line and I've had people see me do it before. Never been an issue to date.

If you want to call, talk to Dave or Dan (the Rev.). Great guys..........I did have one incident there where Dan had gotten onto me for opening up a pistol case (pistol inside) on the showroom to show someone. He was quick, professional and just let me know the policies. Although some of their sales practices and other things I've found not to my liking, they've always treated me fairly.

I agree. Dan, DJ, Justin, Jerome, Deborah, everyone there is great to do business with. I can't say enough about thier customer service in general.

Overall I would agree with you and I do perfer the Bullet trap over the DFW gun club. It's just this one time - not sure his name but he went off on me.. like I said, perhaps a bad day?

OK, sorry for the delay. I asked for clarification while at the BT today. They are fine with CHL's carrying in the store and actually encourage it. The reply was something like... we spend a great deal of time teaching CHL classes, the more the merrier.

They are also fine with shooting your carry weapon as long as it stays concelaed until you are on the line and... you unholster, set the weapon down briefly and then pick it up and shoot. Drawing from the holster and firing is not acceptable no matter how slow it is done. They want to see you set the pistol down first before firing. The logic is that drawing and firing at any speed may cause others to think that this is acceptable and create a possibly dangerous situation.

FWIW they kinda laughed at the notion that anyone would see the sign and think that CHL holders were not welcome. They said the wost thing is when someone stops at the door, reads the sign, unholsters their weapons and begins to unload it at the door. The sign is mostly to keep folks from walking in with a loaded pistol thier hand.
