Don't telegraph your position to someone who is more than willing to break into what they know (or should know) to be an occupied dwelling. If they wanted in easy without hurting someone they would have rang the door bell or somehow checked to see the place was empty.
My posts on this website are worth every cent you paid me for them.

There are folks who think that just pulling out a handgun will make the BG run away ....
Many times it works, but many times it doesn't.
The same thing might be said about the sound of a shotgun being racked ...
Many times it will work, but you can't absolutely count on it.
Masaad Ayoob, in his 'Stresfire' series, said that, if the BG is on drugs, very very desperate, or just plain nuts, he/she make take that sound as meaning you are not all that serious, because racking the slide means (to them) that you were not ready to begin with.

If an intruder hears that sound in my house it would be because I missed on the first shot.

Agreed. Sadly I have been on a buying spree as of late and have not spent nearly enough range time with the new acquisitions.

No - if you short stroke it you now have a gun that won't fire when you press the trigger, you'll have given away your position/presence, and the next sound you hear will most likely be the intruder putting a few rounds your way from the gun that they had the foresight to have already loaded. Instead of being in a defensive position fully prepared against the intruder's next move, you'll be trying to resolve your malfunction in the dark, and making alot of noise doing it.
