My friend gave me a 1943 SG Carbine that he bought from DCM in 1963.

These should be classified Curios and Relics by ATF, due to their age. This would make C&R FFL license holders (like me) able to order them to be shipped to my house w/ no (other) FFL involved. I have wanted an M1 Carbine since I was 18, but I let a dealer talk me into a Mini-14 for my first gun, though I did like it too.

It would have been an interesting variation, although I think that it’s better suited for the .30 carbine cartridge due to the rebated rim. Also, .30 Carbine power from the rifle's 18” barrel is comparable to or slightly better than the .357 magnum .

It throws a 110 gr FMJ at a nominal 1,990 ft/s, producing 967 ft⋅lb of energy. The image below is a snapshot from the ballistic testing of three .357 magnum lever action rifles from the Sept-2012 issue of Gun-Tests magazine. It shows them all throwing a 110 grain bullet at velocities in the 1750-1810 fps……or slightly less powerful than the .30 Carbine.

I’m not knocking .357 in a carbine…..I want one in a lever action. But I’m not sure that it would be any kind of an advantage in an M1 carbine. And that doesn’t include probable magazine feed problems with a rimmed cartridge from a straight (un-curved) magazine, since the M1’s magazine inserts straight in, like an AR-15's, and doesn’t rock and lock like a Dragunov's mag which holds the rimmed 7.62x54R.

Now, what might be interesting, if it’s the ballistics you’re after, would be a Ruger PCC in .357 Sig……although I’d prefer one in 10mm.
