Its not really hot shot, but were team driving to somewhere, NC and back.

Its for a buddy of mines dad, and were making $400 each. We leave thursday AM, so I will read responses until then.

According to PDO, I am clear except for stupid Alabama (no madatory background check) no carry with texas CHL there. Since I would like to carry on the trip, or at least have something ready to go in the truck, if I bring a lock box and lock it up, unloaded in the box while in AL should this satisfy the requirement??

I understand most of you are not lawyers ( ) so you dont have to start of with IANAL or something...

Just curious what you guys think.

After your return, apply for your FL permit, and Alabammy will not be an issue next time.

Nick, Why haven't you gotten your New Hampshire non-resident permit? It's good in Bama and it's only $20 and a stamp.

PDO...

I got my Non-Res NH last year...$20 through the mail...

Make sure you dot yer "I's" and cross yer "T's" on the application, its a one pager...

Make a "color copy" of your CHL (front and back, don't ask why), and a front/back copy of your DL, try to feed the same sheet through a color copier and just adjust the position of the original licence and don't overlap...Mail that, the application, make a money order out and place all in an envelope, lick it, stamp it and out the door...

You'll see a NH CCW permit back in about 2 weeks...To late for this trip though...

I think you get about 5-6 extra States you don't get with a Texas CHL...

The PDO license tool will tell you where you're covered...

Don't forget to make duplicates of everything you do send, just in case...

Yes, the factory box is fine. As for the mags, as I recall Jim's posts on this subject, I think loaded mags are fine, so long as the ammo is covered. I think Jim also said putting them in a mag pouch will do. You might run a search on posts by Jim Longley (jimlongley) and get more and better information.

I won't say I know nothing about crossing state lines on the ground, Chas, but my primary expertise is air travel.

That said, I think the federal transportation of firearms act (or wwhatever its real name is) would cover the gun in a locked box (as long as they are not transiting NY City,) but I would keep the ammo apart.

Sorry, I didn't realize Nick was traveling by car; thought he was traveling by air. I should have read more carefully.

FOPA protects you while traveling through the state, and I believe the factory box locked and in the trunk will be fine. The gun has to be unloaded, which in most states means a loaded mag can be next to the pistol and the gun is still considered "unloaded." I don't know about Alabama, so I'd probably take the rounds out of the mags.

Thanks for that link! I just printed two copies and will be mailing them off for my wife and I.

Just made it back safe and sound. I missed CHL forum day, but next time I shall be there!

Carrying wasn't an issue and was welcome at the shady truck stops along the way.

Through AL I just put the gun in the box, w mags, and put the box in the tool box, and rearmed when we stopped for gas in a non AL state.

NH permit is my new project.
