Well I just left a job interview with Gander Mtn. and they sent me for a drug screening and said they'd call me for training on Monday if the drug test is clear (it will be).So I might get to carry at work (assuming I get the job which I think I will).Plus I'll get a 20% discount.

Good luck on the job. Does Gander Mountain not have a policy against employees carrying at work?

I was recently at Bass Pro Shops and learned from one their firearm sales associates that, even with a CHL, they cannot carry at work.

Hopefully Gander Mountain is different...

I know the store manager, firearms manager, and several other employees at the Texarkana Gander Mtn. They all have CHLs, and gripe that they can't carry at work.

Well dang it! Maybe the Corsicana store will be more lenient. But if the other stores in the chain dont get to carry I doubt I will either then.
I'm startinhg out as a cashier/customer service associate but if an opening comes available in guns I'm gonna go for it b/c the guys at this store dont know squat sometimes.Example:I asked one for .45GAP ammo once and they gave me .45ACP and then they looking at me quizzically and said "well whats the difference?" So I showed them the casing length difference and the different guns that they sold that are .45GAP and not .45ACP.Plus I hope I get put in guns so I can help all the women! B/c it seems like they kinda brush off the women back there in the gun dept.

If being able to carry on the job is important to you, why didn't you ask about it during the job interview?

At the time I was more concerned with actually getting the job first b/c I REALLY need one right now.So I'm happy just to get the job ...carry or no carry.Yeah it'll suck w/o being able to carry, but I just need a job.I'll take what I can get at this point b/c they're the only ones willing to work around my college hours right now.

Just check the employee handbook carefully. Some companies give you a backdoor pass: when my wife accepted a job at a major national retailer (
they called
her!), we looked carefully through the employee handbook. It said (my paraphrase): "Illegal weapons are not allowed on company premises." Key word being "illegal".

I stopped at the Gander Mountain in Corsicana when passing through to look at their selection of pocket pistols. While talking to the person behind the counter, he confided in me that he was carrying a Kel-Tec P3AT at that very moment and then pulled it out to show it to me. He may have been carrying against policy, but, if so, I doubt he would have shown it to me.
Please don't flame me for this person's actions. If the shoe were on the other foot, I would not have revealed to a customer that I was carrying. In fact, the salesman was never aware that I was carrying a G23 IWB while we spoke.
On another topic, MoodyAmber, I thought you were in the Huntsville area (I believe I remember you talking about shooting at Lion Star). Did you move?

I know when I went into Gander to check out my first holster, the employee that was helping me told me that he had his CHL and liked a particular one, but he was not allowed to carry it while on the clock. It had to stay in his locker.

When I was in college at SHSU we had a prof who was from Corsicana. He always called it "God's Country". Now that I graduated and took a job in South Lousiana I figure he must have been here before there because after this ANYthing is God's Country!

LOL! I'm glad I didnt have that prof at SHSU.I'd have told him he was nuts! But,looking back I guess there are worse places to live than Corsicana...Huntsville being one of them lol.But I'm living on my parents 80acres out by the lake so I could easily call this "Gods country" ...its nice here.

Not to mention the fruitcakes at the Collin Street Bakery in Corsicana. They are the only ones that are edible in my opinion (My Mom's were TERRIBLE!!!!)
If you get the job I'll bet there are quite a few of the other employees that are CHL holders; I'm sure they can inform you what is permissible. Good luck on getting into the firearms section. Chain stores can always use knowledgeable folks in the specialty areas. That is what I will miss about Sportstman's Warehouse in Lewisville; they had some fairly good gun people in that area.
