I have and wear the 5-11 Tactical Vest. I carry on my hip though, and use the extra pockets it carries only when I really need to. I use it mostly just to cover the weapon. I get a lot of questions about fishing because everyone seems to assume it is a fishing vest (which raises a few eyebrows at work).

I originally got the vest for the concealed carry system it has built into it. I found that the vest will conceal a full size 1911 with no problem, but wearing it is a separate issue. The weight of a full size pistol will pull down on the vest and is uncomfortable for me. I am just guessing that it is something you could get used to if you really wanted. The vest does have straps built in to snap it to your belt for extra support if needed.

One of the reasons I did not keep trying to carry with the vest is my personal preference. I have carried on my hip for so many years that my hand goes there when i need the weapon without thinking about it. If I carried in the vest pocket, it would require me developing a completely new set of habits and muscle memory. I am too lazy to really do the practice this would require.

I bought one of these a while back, but was a little disappointed. It's a great fishing vest, but it's not really a concealment vest, although it does conceal if you're wearing IWB.

Someone called them "shoot me first" vests.

I have a 5.11 also. I wear a vest as my primary cover. My Mom make s most of them.
I cannot add anything to what srothstein said. It will conceal a full size 1911, a 4" Ruger GP100 & other like size. In the summer it is much hotter than the lighter ones suggested below.
The one sided weight was the issue w/ me. I like mine but use it strictly for cover & belt carry.

I bought one in October 2006 and promptly returned it because of two issues.

One was that it would not properly hold a 5" 1911 (their later reply told me they had corrected that).

The other was that I am very large. My chest measurement indicated a 4XL while my waist indicated a 5XL. I ordered the 5XL only to find the vest too small, even though I wear 4X shirts, jackets, and vests.

They wanted to charge me an extra $100 to make it fit.

I was glad to be rid of it, and them.

This is one option:

http://www.smithandalexander.com/apparel.html

Or this:

http://www.casualmale.com/store/en_US/c ... d=cat10079

Several times a year I see the Foxfire vest on sale from different merchants.

Why not wear it - while wearing your brand new shiny "official" CHL Badge?....

The point is to never stand out, look peculiar or notably different or out of place. My buddy bought me a Kimber tshirt at the gun show yesterday. I plan on wearing it at the gun range and thats about it. Its just one more thing to broadcast trouble. True, your average citizen may not know what Kimber is, but if I saw someone wearing one I would definitely be weary of him. Not all gun enthusiasts are good guys. There was a video a few months ago of a man robbing a convenience store with a Glock t-shirt and 511 vest - would you have guessed he was a bad guy? Or would you have assumed he was a CHL holder? I don't even want CHL holders to know I'm carrying and a 511 vest (or similar) more than states that for you.
