Last night I had a post called Sig 250 vs. 226, and one guy brought up that if I got an HK P30 then I'd forget all the rest..... it made me think about it. i was talking to a friend who had shot an HK, and he mentioned Walthers were nice also.

I don't know anything about HK vs. Walther for concealed carry or even home defense.

Any thoughts?

HK, period.

Why is that? I don't ANYTHING at all about Walther...

I carry an HK P30. Great gun. No issues.
Things you need to watch about: your weak hand may touch the slide release and the slide will not lock up open on last rd. You need just to be careful.
The slide release will show wear marks quickly.
Mags are no where to be fond. Order at least 1 more if you can.
limited holsters option especially with light attached
Low recoil
Very Accurate
will shoot +p rd.
grip has 3 size for the side panels as well as 3 size for back strap. 27 total choices.
Polymer light weight
Light rail is nice. I mated it with TLR-2 C4 edition.
can be concealed easily.
Price ~ $760-$840

This is one of those broad questions that really needs a lot of follow up info about you and what you're looking for in a gun. Your question revolves merely around brand names, and each of us has brands we like and dislike. For me, all three brands HK, Sig, Walther are top-notch and I doubt you'd go wrong with anything from any of them. But you REALLY need to at least hold each potential gun in your hands and find out if you like it and it fits your hands well. Better yet, fire each gun as a range rental.

But, to play to your question, if I had to rank those three brands it would be a tie between HK and Sig with Walther coming in 3rd. But again you won't go wrong with any of them. HKs and Sigs are pricey, with Walther being slightly less expensive usually.

You really need to try them out for yourself.

Well there is about a $200 difference between the 2, but my Walther P-99 is the ONLY pistol I own that has never jammed. HK I believe is just a slight bit better, but I don't think anyone is going to call a Walther a piece of junk here. I think either is a great pic, just depends how much you want to spend.

I have several H&K handguns. I think what makes them superior is the recoil system. Take one aprat and you will see what I mean. My USP .40 and .45 have less recoil than all my other handguns, even my 9mm. I am not very famliar with Walther, I am sure they make fine weapons as well. I am a big fan of H&K and Springfield XD.

Get Both

My wife has a HK45C for her "big" pistol and wants a Walther PPS 9mm for her "small" pistol. She has a thing for German guns with unusual mag release levers and expensive magazines.

The HK has always worked and puts holes where she want them.

I am partial to HK over Sig or Walther myself. I like the feel of the HK's better. My Dad carries an HK P30 and loves it. He is a lefty though and bought it specifically for the ambi features. The Sig controls with separate decocker and safety adds more confusion to the equation than what I need. I have shot a few Walther P22s but never a PPK, PPS, or P99

besides the obvious platitudes that one should hold and/or test fire a gun before they buy it, general opinions "revolving around the brand names" is what i was looking for. thanks for the info....it looks like most prefer, or at least have used, HK's. This says something to me in and of itself. I'm not knocking Walthers, to be sure. but that P30 looks reeeaallyy interesting.

Honestly, I'm having a bit of trouble overlooking the Sig 229 since I've been shooting Sigs for years. but, it may be time to step out of my comfort zone..

Devil's advocate warning!

I own an H&K, a UPS Compact .40, and I carry it about a third of the time. I'm not in love with the gun, but it is a good gun - dead nuts reliable, built like a tank, and acceptably accurate. That said, I carry 1911s the other two thirds of the time, and when I'm carrying the H&K, I carry it cocked and locked - despite the decocker feature - because muscle memory makes me want to snap off a thumb-safety when drawing, and because the double action trigger pull on the USPc is beyond atrocious.

So, I'm looking pretty hard at SAO Sigs in .45 ACP these days, particularly the P220. They are sweeeeet!

TAM, this is not the first time that I have seen you mention your unhappiness with regards to the hard DA pull with your USP. Why not try swapping the hammer spring out for either a 12lb or a 10lb one? I have been using 10lb hammer springs in all three of my H&Ks with no light strikes or other issues and they offer a much lighter DA pull. Swapping them out takes 2 minutes and Wolf sell them for about $5 each or three for $9. Stock weight is 14lb I believe, and IMO this is a mod which is well worth the small cost to try. Just a suggestion

Thanks for the tip. I'm no gunsmith, and I had no idea that such a thing was available. Interestingly, my "seat of the pants" trigger scale measured it at 14 lbs too. I guess I have a sensitive derriere.



Anyway, I found it on Midway, and just ordered it - along with some Meprolight night sights.
