Buy a Glock or S&W or save for the Sig?

#1

Post by gguess66 »

I have decided to buy a .40 cal handgun. My next question is this, and I know that this will start a debate between polymer & steel. Should I go ahead and buy a Glock or Smith & Wesson M&P or save my money and buy the Sig. Or buy the Glock or S&W now and save the money latter and buy a Sig? :txflag:

If you buy the S&W M&P you won't need a Glock Or a Sig. ;-)

I have both a Browning Hi-Power in .40 S&W and a new XDM .40. I greatly prefer the XDM.

As a big S&W fan with half dozen S&W's, I really considered the M&P over the XDM, but in the end prefered the XDM.

Glock=always will work no matter what, as long as you don't limp wrist. Lighter too

Sig=Quality Firearm, more expensive but a real joy to shoot

Smith=I have a 9mm and took it apart, if for some reason the trigger seems flemsy to me.

Glocks run, all the time. And there is a ton of after market parts if you want to upgrade . It is also very easy to work on if you do want to change some parts around. I am not a plastic gun person, but Glocks have made a believer out of me.

One last thing, most Sigs have Steel slides and Alloy frames. Now if you want an awesome all steel gun frame/slide, Sig P220ST. Very heavy but a real pleasure to carry and shoot.

go out and shoot all 3 of them, after that buy the one that fits you best and you are comfortable with. you can't go wrong with either of them. they are all fine pistols, but the difference is how it fits YOU, not me or any one else.

IMO, all three pistols are very good as far as reliability. I wouldn't put any of the three higher than the other two for reliability. I have found that I am senstive to the sharp recoil of the 40 cal cartridge so that was a big factor for me. It may not bug you at all.

Here is my story: :)
I bought a Glock 22 years ago. Reliable and accurate pistol and good to shoot. 40 cal recoil is heavy, but manageable. The 22 is a big pistol and I never really carried it. I never had any issues with it at all. I still have it, but I don't carry it. I shoot it at the range on occasion. It is the only Glock I own. It isn't a go to pistol for me as much as my XD45, but plan on keeping it.

I bought a S&W M&P 40 a couple years ago. It feels great in the hand. It was very reliable and accurate and is a bit slimmer than the Glock. It has great fit and finish and is prettier than the Glock. The only thing that bugged me is the felt recoil is more than the Glock. I guess I am more sensitive to recoil, but it bugged me and made it hard not to start flinching while shooting. I sold it to a buddy of mine. It was his first pistol and he loves it.

I found a Used Pre-Owned Sig P229 that is like new as far as I am concerned. It also shoots great and is very reliable. The recoil is smoother to me than both the Glock and S&W. It might be slightly heavier so that might be part of it. Right now, it is my preferred carry gun until or unless I find a good 45 cal handgun to use.

If recoil is an issue for you, get the Sig. Wait around and find a used one. I don't know if they are worth the extra $300 new. If recoil doesn't bother you at all, I think I'd prefer the S&W since it is cheaper and has better features over the Glock. The S&W had a slimmer grip than the others also. I personally shoot better with fatter grips, but everyone is different.

Gotta agree with that - - - I own 2 M&P 40 and my wife owns an M&P 9 JG. There have been problems with the 40 caliber Glocks in LE applications the SIG is overpriced IMHO so what does that leave you?

Seriously, you can't go wrong with any of the three guns you are interested in but my loyalty belongs to S&W.

Exactly. I went out and shot 5-10 different guns (all fairly popular including the guns you list except the M&P). I shot better with some and worse with others. It seemed to make the most sense to buy one of the guns that I shot better with from the get-go. It came down to the Glock or a Springfield Armory XD. I shot both back to back to back several times. I shot about the same with both guns, but something about the XD just felt better (I still can't put my finger on it). So I bought an XDM. They make the XD and XDM both in .40. I also really like the browning high power and would probably add that to the list.

Regardless of what you buy, I'd try to shoot an example of each and go with what feels best and/or what you shoot best.

One more thing about the XDM. If you get the XDM .40, you can purchase a .357sig barrel and fire those, and you can purchase a 9mm barrel and mag and fire those all out of the same gun.

I think you may be able to do something similar with a Sig, fire both .40 and .357 out of the same gun with different barrels. I'm not sure if there is a comparable option with either of the other two.

I own a sig and glock .40. Both serve a purpose, but when it comes to pure fun and joy at the range, sig all the way! :clapping:

Hard to go wrong with any of them. I got started on the Glock platform because of the reliabilty and price. Kind of hard to go wrong with Glock or S&W given the price and reliability of each gun but I would be a liar if I said I would take any of them over a Sig. The bottom line for me was get as much gun for what I could afford. I'm not sure I would spend the extra money on a Sig as a carry gun. Good luck, shoot them all and you will know what works best for you!

unless you are a Sig fan like my brother, i just don't think the extra cash is worth it. Glock and S&W are great choices.

:iagree: Go out to a local range a rent them all , that`s your best bet so you`ll know what you want for sure.
I personally have 3 glocks and 2 sigs , love them all among all of my firearms.....
