SD ammo obsolete?

#1

Post by oneshooter »

I CCW daily, a SIG 220 in 45cal. or a LW Colt Commander also in 45cal.. Several years ago I happened on a estate sale and got a very good price on several (3)cases of Speer Lawman 200gr JHP (AKA "Flying Ashtrays). Recently I have been told that the ammo is obsolete and I should change to "more modern" SD ammo. :???:
Prices and availability being what they are I am loath to change ammo. The Lawman shoot accuratly, and feed 100%. And I still have a case+ on hand. :evil2:
Suggestions?

As long as you are confident that it will go bang when you need it to, I wouldn't worry.

Keep it. Carry it. Don't worry about it. Shoot it when you have to.

I will take it off your hands and dispose of it properly for you. I am only thinking of YOU, my friend!

As long as it feeds reliably in your guns, that was the biggest complaint back in the day, use it! The flying ashtray was one of the best stoppers in it's day. If the ammo worked then why shouldn't it work today? Newer ammo is bonded and may defeat barriers better but I doubt the BG will notice the difference.

Even if i didn't trust it to fire, I'd try to work out a load that's as near identical as possible, pull the bullets, pop the primers, and refit with new powder and primers. They're good bullets.

I still have some 45ACP Black Talons. I ran some of them recently through my 1911A1, with no problems. I doubt they could be considered obsolete.

The fellow I was talking to is one of those who have to have the "latest and greatest" of SD weapons and ammo. He can't understand why I carry a 30+ year old LW Commander. I tell him it is because it is what I am used to, and IT WORKS!!!
Still have a case+ of Speer left. Enough to last a while.

He would really flip if he knew I, on occassion, carry a Colt SAA 4 3/4"in 45LC loaded with Silvertips.

Can you still get BlackTalons? Someone told me that they were outlawed. Any truth to that?

They were never outlawed, they just got lot of bad press. There was a civil suit against Olin (Winchester) that was filed by a murder victim's family, where Black Talons had been used, but the suit was dismissed. Winchester pulled the Black Talons in 1993 from public sale, but you can legally own them and buy them if you find any on a shelf somewhere. The current Winchester Ranger SXT ammo is the 'Same 'Xact Thing' without the black Lubalox coating on the bullet.

Back in the day Black Talon was hyped as being "instantly lethal" "will turn a person into hamburger" so on and so on. In truth they were no better than any of the other offerings available at the time and not as good as some (Hydra Shock.)

The name "Black Talon" and the fact that Winchester stressed the "talons" in the ads of the day and the gun rags all touting it as being the most deadly ammo available caused a media frenzy. Resulting in Winchester taking them off the market. The lawsuit alluded to added to the decision.

There are much better bullets on the market today and collectors will pay big bucks for Black Talon ammo now. I've seen prices as high as $10.00 per round and $75-100 for a full box. If you have any don't shoot them they are worth real money to a collector.
