Ok so my next move is to join the 1911 club.

Thinking Springfield Loaded version. Has to be blued or parkarized with dark grips

Want something that I can pass along to my kids.

Opinions?

Wait for the hundred year edition to come out next year. That would be a nice one to pass down to the kiddos.

Excellent suggestion, but you'd better buy two [or more], so they don't fight over it.

The best 1911 is the one that's paid for. I own three 1911's and my favorites in order are:

1. Springfield LW .45 Compact - Best Carry & eats anything and shoots where I aim it
2. Taurus PT 1911 - Eats anything and the MT's are where they should be in a 2' circle
3. Kimber Custom Target II - Most accurate and also most finicky, MT's are on the ground someplace

There will no doubt be many hoots of derision from those who have more and better and who are also more learned on the subject of the venerable 1911 .45 acp. Bring it on

The best 1911 has an original style firing pin, not series 80 or swartz junk.

Not going to put my neck in the noose, but you might want to look at STI. A lot of gun for the money, and they are located in Texas.

+1 on STI - - - You can't go wrong with a Springfield or Colt eiher. Personally, I'd avoid the "K" word I've seen too many of the series II choke to be comfortable with one.

You mean Kimber? I have had my USII for a long time, and never had any problems with it that werent caused by me, IE dirty gun. I have tried to cause it to jam by intentionally limp wristing it, and it has always functioned well. Shot about 100 rounds of wolf through it before I had to clean it due to it being too dirty to eject. Same thing with my Colts. Dad has a Taurus he bought recently that shoots well too. STI makes some very good stuff, but its way out of my price range.

I'm right there with you. I have three Kimbers and they work great. The only one I ever had a problem with was when the firing pin and ejector area had not been cleaned in a long time. Other than that, no problems, even with JHP ammo. But I am definitely of the mind set that you should find what fits for you.

'best 1911' is going to depend on personal preference and experience:

# preference:
- some say its not a 1911A1 unless its a 70 series; others say its not hard to get a decent trigger on an 80's series
- some say its gotta have a barrel bushing, others say a bull barrel is better
- some say its gotta be .45acp, others will say its hard to beat a 9mm 1911

# experience
- look around long enough and you'll find some swear by certain brands, and others swear at the same brands

You really can't go wrong with a 1911 from the major manufacturers: Springfield, Para, Colt, Kimber, Wilson, STI, SVI, but there's always a chance of a lemon. Problems can generally be traced to ammo or magazines.

I would love to find a 1911 in 9mm but they seem to be hard to find.

I do think that a true 1911 is a .45 but shooting it is about 3x cost per round over a 9mm.

You can always get the Swartz junk removed and a proper firing pin installed. Dont listen to any garbage about "defeating safety devices will hang you in court" junk. Kimber sells models like the Warrior and SIS without the Swartz safety. I prefer Springfields and Kimber myself so I can say you wont go wrong with either. Recently acquired a Loaded SS Springer and havent any issues yet after 200rds. Best, like already mentioned, is very subjective. Best to me is my Kimber Pro CDP with a bobbed MSH. Conceals well, shoots great, looks great and never hiccupped.
