I haven't gone through them all yet but 6 is one of my favorites.
I also like;
44.”The philosophy of gun control: Teenagers are roaring through town at 90MPH, where the speed limit is 25. Your solution is to lower the speed limit to 20.”

I found many of these very interesting. This one, however, brings up another question.

58.”No law ever prevented a crime.”
~Anonymous

For the law abiding person, is it the law, their morals, or the consequences that prevents them from committing a crime? Or a combination of two or more of these?

The fear of consequences only prevents crime when the possibility and severity of the consequence outweighs their desire to commit the crime.

Moral people are needed in a truly lawful society

"Great danger lies in the notion we can reason with evil."
-Winston Churchill

And the wind shall say 'Here were decent godless people'. Their only monument the asphalt road and a thousand lost golf balls.

I dunno, I consider myself a law-abiding person but there are things I would LOVE to do that I don't because of the consequences... like excessive speeding on empty roads, doing RC aerial photography around airports, or owning a full auto rifle made after 1986...

For the most part though morals play the biggest role.

If you ask a criminologist, the answer is a combination of all three, depending on the person. Moral people do right thing, which may or may not be what is legal (not all laws have to do with morals). Some moral people will obey the law, just because it is the law.

For people who are less strict in their moral reasoning, there are some who believe in obeying the law. They do not tie morals and law together. A lot of politicians fall into this group, as can be seen when they are caught in unethical situations. Their first defense is "I did not break the law." This is also true, so there are definitely some people who obey the law simply because it is the law, not tied to their morals in any way.

And then there are the group of people who obey the law out of fear of punishment. They may or may not be moral, and they may or may not respect the law. But they are not willing to pay the consequences so they obey the law. This category is best shown by looking at traffic laws. Most traffic laws are not related to morals. Many people obey traffic laws because they are moral and believe in obeying the law as a moral thing. Many people obey the law simply because it is the law. And some drivers obey the law simply because they cannot afford any more tickets, or in other words, because they fear the consequences of breaking the law.

101.”This year will go down in history. For the first time, a civilized nation has full gun registration. Our streets will be safer, our police more efficient, and the world will follow our lead into the future!” ~Adolph Hitler, 1935, on The Weapons Act of Nazi Germany
This certainly isn't my favorite quote, but it sure exemplifies the consequences of those actions.

Some of the most immoral people alive will follow the law to the letter while completely skirting around the intent of the law. Many politicians follow this road as srothstein notes. I have know a handful of men who would make promises and handshake agreements which they would entirely disregard at a later time because their was no contract. These type of people I find especially distasteful.

I tend to separate man's law from God's law. We can do some really terrible things that are 100% legal, but that doesn't make them right. I look at obeying man's law as "render unto Caesar". We need to respect our leaders and our societal laws, but we have to do what is moral and right as well.

These two are my favorites:

11.”No kingdom can be secured otherwise than by arming the people. The possession of arms is the distinction between a freeman and a slave. He, who has nothing, and who himself belongs to another, must be defended by him, whose property he is, and needs no arms. But he, who thinks he is his own master, and has what he can call his own, ought to have arms to defend himself, and what he possesses; else he lives precariously, and at discretion.”
~James Burgh

99.”To my mind it is wholly irresponsible to go into the world incapable of preventing violence, injury, crime, and death. How feeble is the mindset to accept defenselessness. How unnatural. How cheap. How cowardly. How pathetic.”
~Ted Nugent
“While the people are virtuous they cannot be subdued; but when once they lose their virtue then will be ready to surrender their liberties to the first external or internal invader.” ― Samuel Adams
