The Squirrels are coming

Squirrels are showing up in our maturing oak trees. I've purchased some Aquila .22 Super Colibri ammo to eliminate some of the buggers. The ammo is primer only and subsonic, less than 600 fps. It measures to be Long, not Long Rifle. I intend to use the ammo in my Ruger Mark II pistol. Only unknown is how it will function in my MKII. I raelize that I'll have to cycle manually, but am unsure how the shorter round will behave. Anybody have experience with this ammo in a MKII? TIA

I've used this ammo in my 6" S&W 622. My experience was that it's louder than your average air gun, but not as powerful. When fired at a wooden fence post from 2-3 feet, it would never penetrate deeper than the surface, and often bounced off. If you're looking to take care of some squirrels, I'd suggest an air rifle.

I use CCI CB caps to shoot squirrels from a 20" barreled bolt action. 2nd and 3rd follow shots are always necc. unless I hit them in the head the first shot. This is usually from about 20 yds. Can't speak for shooting them out of a handgun except to say they are much louder than out of a rifle, which is about " air gun" loud.

I use a 1200 fps air rifle to keep the rabbits from my wife's flowers. Scoped and very efficient and quiet.

Since it is primer only, you MAY have to cycle manually. I have fired a small amount from a 10/22 (extremely quiet), but cannot remember if it fully cycled the bolt or not. I do not recall any feed issues from the magazine, though. Depending on the range/angle you are shooting, the low velocity (exagerated trajectory curve) may be something to factor into your shot placement.

I think you're going to need more power. Just shooting SSS from a long gun might give it a bit more energy.
I don't shoot squirrels, but I think I'd use my springer airgun if noise was an issue.
If it's not, regular .22LR is the ticket

Squirrels are considered game animals and as such have bag limits, etc., they also require a hunting license to shoot, outside city limits of course...

An acquaintance had squirrels damaging his outside air conditioner, so he started shooting the ones he found in his yard. His neighbor, spotted him doing this and called the police. While the officer that came out in response to his neighbor's call was sympathetic, especially after seeing the damage caused by these critters, warned him if a game warden had been called he'd be in trouble. He let the guy off the hook, but warned him to cease and desist the practice of shooting squirrels.

Plus, I know of another, after his trees matured had squirrels suddenly appearing. As time passed he shot over sixty of them and finally quit when he realized that shooting them was an exercise in futility. The squirrels eliminated will be replaced with a new batch.

Once your trees are habitat for them - you'll have them from now on.

While it is true that they will re-populate, if you conduct a mass extermination they will take a year or so to come back, at least here in Central Texas with Red Squirrels I have found that to be true. My squirrel problem was partially self imposed as they multiplied beyond what the normal population would probably be due to my deer feeder in my front yard. Once they started ruining my peaches two springs ago I had to draw the line. I killed off about 10, and they have just now started to move back in. I prefer to use a .410, kills them clean and you can safely shoot them from trees.

Interesting. A few years ago my wife got all bent when a neighborhood boy shot a squirrel out in his front yard with a pellet gun. She called the police and the officer said there nothing he could do about it. Said there was nothing wrong and the boy had broken no laws. He didn't mention anything about a bag limit.

I shoot it through a markIII ruger which is about the same gun. I also shoot it through my model 60 marlin. Shooting it from a rifle is so quiet that all you hear its the firing pin and what the bullet hits.
One word of caution, If your not positive you hit your target, check the barrel. I only had one bullet get stuck in the 10 years I've been shooting that stuff, but never stop being safe. Being so quiet, its hard to tell unless you see the bullet hit the target.

You do need to check the game laws regarding taking squirrels in your area. After that if you find that it is legal and you want to eliminate some of them I will second the thought of getting a decent air rifle to take care of the problem.

I have a Beeman that I shoot in the back yard. Not at squirrels but just for plinking. It is pretty accurate for a $200 air rifle.

This is at 20 yds. I did pull one of the 5 shots. It measured 925 fps with a chronograph. For subsonic rounds I shoot them out of a pump rifle, but not in the city limits.
