Ammo Feed Problem with New Glock 17

#1

Post by Napier »

Fellow Glock owners, I just bought my first Glock, a 17, thinking that it would be a super-reliable feeder of whatever ammo I could find if ever there was a another ammo drought. I was surprised that it wouldn't reliably feed several brands: Winchester white box, Federal Classic hydra-shok JHP, and Hornady critical defense JHP. It loved Federal +P+ JHP and Winchester bonded PDX1 JHP like water through a hose. I think I broke it in with over 100 rounds fired, and was careful not to limp-wrist. Is this common with the Glock 17 that it is a picky eater? Thanks for your replies.

I cannot speak for the 17, but when my wife got her Glock 19 last April, she bought it for the same reason - reliability.
We found that straight out of the box, the magazines seemed to stick a bit.
Once we ran about 30 rounds through each magazine, it started eating everything.
I don't know if it truly was the magazine, or the weapon, but after the first few mags, all was good.

I would get another range session in before you try to correct any problems. Make sure it is lubed and clean and feed it. How many malfunction do you think you had in the 100 or so rounds fired? I have a few 9mm Glocks and all are extremely reliable. Sorry to hear you are having trouble. I say feed it some more and take note of what magazine and what type of ammo?

I know there are some forums out there that are strictly dedicated to Blocks. Just as there are some dedicated to the 1911.

Is it a Gen4 Glock? I think update the recoil spring shortly after the gen4 came out because of issues. I would call Glock and see what they say.

If its a Gen4 model 17 look at the recoil spring. If it's numbered with 01 then it will not work well with 115Gr 9mm ammo. If your gun is a Gen4 with the 01 spring contact Glock and they will send you the correct part. I know the feeling, I paid good money for my model 19 Gen4 so it should work out of the box. But Glock will make it right so contact them if you need a different spring. Oh, and we need to see Pictures!

If its a gen4 with the original springs, they say to shoot it with some hotter loads for the first 100-200 rounds to break the spring in (which annoys me since glocks have developed a rep for shooting anything). I would say it seems to be more common with the Gen 4 but most of the problems were related to the g19. None of my gen 3s have had any issues. Check out glocktalk.com and you will more than likely find a thread pertaining to your exact problem. I believe the new spring is numbered 02.

Thanks for your advice, Teamless. I never thought of the mags because I've never had a mag problem with any other gun. I'll shoot 'er some more!

Recit, thanks, I thought I lubed it right, but I'll slather on more after I clean it. I had 100% misfeeds on the ammo I mentioned. So per your advice I'll shoot another hundred rouinds or so before crying wolf. I have some Corbon and Remington ultimate home defense on order to make sure it likes other high end ammo.

Yup, it's a Gen 4. Didn't know that, thanks Function12! I have been hesitating calling because they always ask stupid questions, and I usually have stupid answers.

Dont over lube the glock. They only need a little in the 5-6 spots in the manual. If there is still the copper lube in the rails, try not to remove that either because it helps with the break in process.

Bless you, G.A., now I think maybe it's not me. All three of the mis-feeders are 115 grain. The Federal that feeds good is 115 grain, but +P+. I'll disassemble and chek it out. Send pictures? Why, I hardly know you!

Many thanks, Cubby. Who'd 'a thunk A Glock would fail out of the box? That's what I expect from a Bersa or a Taurus, having had a few bad experiences with those. I got the Glock because I wasn't sure my old S&W 5906, bless it's aging heart, would take the new hotter ammo. I am on the third repair of a Bersa I got for my wife, and I refuse to have two guns in transit at once.

Hey, Cubby, why dint you write the manual? I looked at that reddish stuff, looked in the manual, said to myself "That doesn't belong there", and wiped it all off! Many of the pistols I have don't call for ANY lube, so I was a bit surprised that the Glock does. Thanks again.

Glock will quickly fix the problem if it is persistent. Just give 'em a call. I've always found them to be extremely friendly and attentive. I'd speculate that the Glock Customer Support job is akin to the Maytag repairman job -- they don't get many calls, so they're always eager to talk to people

P.S. - The Glock owners manual tells you to not wipe off the copper lubricant :)
