I'm new to carrying. Wondering if it's legal to mount a holster under my steering wheel, as long as it's concealed.?

Please advise with your thoughts.

Legal. Just make sure that your pistol when holster or otherwise in car is 100% concealed. No one from outside your car can see it.

Also consider the forces at work if you are in a collision. Would your knees come into painful/injurious contact with the holstered gun? Would the gun remain holstered in such an accident? Just some things to consider.

I've been thinking about coming up with a holster solution for between my legs on the front of the bottom half of the seat. I would think while in the car, it's completely concealed. I wouldn't leave anything in it while not in the car though.

This is how I have mine set up. I used a standard pancake holster that accomidates my autos and revolvers. I drilled the trim piece on the front of my seat, and used rivets to attach the holster. It puts the weapon in the perfect defensive position for a car jacking. Hope the pictures help.

You may want to consider making provisions for concealment.

The present arrangement would likely generate more excitement than you'd enjoy during a traffic stop.

With me sitting in the seat, the firearm is totally concealed, but when I get stopped, and I have...I move it from that location to the pocket in my door. It can be done while rolling and without drawing attention to motion inside of the vehicle. Thank you for the heads up..

Sounds risky to me.
The officer is looking for movements like that and will become nervous if he or she thinks you're doing anything other than lowering you window and keeping your hands in plain sight.

Yeah, you're not doing anything illegal but I would want any interactions with the law to go as smoothly as possible.

USA1 beat me to the punch on this point.

If you make movements like those you described while you're rolling to a stop, you'll likely be removed from the vehicle and will have met the reasonable suspicion standard for a Terry search of your outer clothing. The contact will be much more cautious than cordial. Causing an officer to experience a shot of adrenaline is also unlikely to reduce your chances of being on the receiving end of formal enforcement action.

I should probably point out that the only reason I feel comfortable doing this is because I drive a wagon type vehicle with no rear windows. You can't see in from the rear. I would never do that in my wife's car. I know what you mean about making a LEO unnecessarily edgy. I always try to make stops go smooth as butter.

When you move it to the door pocket, can it be seen at all from the passenger side window, like if the officer or a backup officer approached on the other side?

I've thought about a car mounted holster, but it makes me nervous. I've read of at least one other person on here that ran into some legal problems after trying to conceal a gun off their person in a vehicle. When I look at some of the pictures that are posted of car holsters, particularly the ones right at the from of the seat, I wonder how they couldn't be seen because it looks like they stick up pretty high. I guess I'd have to see one in person sometime to get a better idea of how well they're actually concealed.
