Anyone know of a rifle range in the D/FW area that doesn't ban FMJ?

For some reason, it seems every range I know about doesn't allow FMJ, and I'm a cheap person.

Not sure but you might try Elm Fork or Wichester

Elm Fork does not allow FMJ on the rifle range. They will also go so far as to check russian SP ammo with a magnet to see if the jacket is copper washed steel. If the magnet can pick it up you can't shoot it.

Only ranges I've shot on that allowed FMJ were military.

a bit of a drive, but i make it every few months. you can use just about anything; FMJ, incendiary, tracer, AP.

nitrogen -- check out the Haltom City Rifle and Pistol Club. It's a private club, but membership is VERY reasonable of you shoot a lot, and it's a great facility. FMJ is ok there. 50, 100, and 200 yard distances as well as pistol lanes. Web site is http://www.haltomcityrpc.org.

OK, here goes my dumb question. Why don't they allow FMJ and what is the difference? I didn't know there were so many different types of ammo out there. Please don't brand me with dummy. thanks guys.

Yeah, the only pistol ranges I've been to ONLY allow FMJ! Why would a range not allow it?

Anyway, the reason i'm given is that their backstop won't stop FMJ.

The basic types:

FMJ: Full Metal Jacket: This bullet type has an alloy that encloses the lead of the bullet. It's a solid bullet. The jacket allows the bullet to pass through the muzzle faster with less damage to the barrel. FMJ bullets are cheaper to produce, and generally penetrate a target more so than hollowpoints.

JHP: Jacketed Hollowpoint: Basically, this is a bullet with a hollow tip in the middle. This allows the bullet to flatten out to transfer more velocity energy to the target. These bullets tend to be be better for self defense because they have much less of a tendency to "over penetrate", meaning they tend to not exit their intended targets.

Frangable: A bullet that's designed to disintegrate upon contact with a target into multiple pieces.

Tracer: A bullet that will burn so it is visible in transit.

Blanks: A round with a tiny bullet with little mass, or a round with no bullet at all.

Gibson's Outpost in Mesquite on Lawson Road is FMJ friendly. It's $10.83 per day with a $6.00 annual membership fee.

The quarry in McKinney is free and you can shoot anything you want. It's fairly easy to get to, fun to shoot there and as long as you don't mind being outside, it's wonderful. There's directions in the shooting ranges section.

Bullet Trap in Plano, Tx. will allow any ammo except tracers and metal core (armor piercing) ammo. Shot my AR at their 25yd indoor range today. Not a bad setup but only 2 rifle bays.

Really. They told me "no FMJ" last time I was there

I shot today. I asked because of that reason and I wanted to make sure it was ok to shoot the M855 5.56 surplus ammo I had brought. I had other soft points and hollow points and told them I could shoot those if it was an issue....he said "Nah, you should be fine." On I went and shot 20 rounds of it.

Have to admit, the guy wasn't wearing the typical BT shirt and isn't normally there when I go. That might explain it. I'll double check next time I go and let you know for sure what the policy is.
