I am going to the Conroe gun show to trade in my xdm40 and get a 1911 for range and edc. I am partial to a Kimber Crimson Carry. Does anyone have an alternative recommendation?

I hear lots of good things about the S&W line. I believe they make a comparable model to that kimber.

I used to think that until a local gun shop had on consignment a Colt slide and grips placed onto a no-name beat-up frame with a shot-out barrel for a price that was too good to be true ....

just saying, buyer beware - especially at a gun show.

I own a few kimbers and haven't had any problems, I've even got a pro crimson carry that I've been totin around while I'm have a new safety fit in my tactical ultra. But handle as many as you can for the feel and you'll know when you get that one that's "just right".

I like Kimbers (my most recent auto puchase) and I like STIs (probably my next auto purchase) and I like Smith & Wessons (my first two auto purchases). I have nothing to disagree with here.
Take AndyC's advice and go fondle as many of them as you can and see if there's one you just can't put down.

If you like that round butt, then definitely get one. I love the bobtail. Can't go wrong w it. Look at more of the S&W E series.. or a Dan Wesson ;)

It's got a scandium frame, not sure if that's what you're looking for.

No scales though!

Hilton Yam at 10-8 Performance is the resource that I go to for 1911 info. His information pretty much mimics what I have discovered in my 1911 use.

This link talks about what is needed for LEO 1911 use. Your needs might not be as stringent but it's well worth the read.

There is a lot more 1911 info in these articles.

I am partial to Springfield Armory 1911's. You'll get a forged frame instead of a cast frame and SA's customer service has a terrific reputation, whereas Ihave heard hit or miss stories about Kimber's customer service.
