Just as a matter of curiousity, I'm wondering about everyones favorite targets. What do you enjoy shooting at? Bulls-eye, silhouette, plastic water bottles, fruit gone bad, gelatin molds, etc..... I know that for serious shooting practice we all have serious targets to use, but what about shooting just for fun? When I lived out on the west coast they had a "dented can" store. You could buy cases of creamed corn or such that was super cheap. Ever seen a can of creamed corn hit by a high velocity bullet? It was pretty spectacular...... Of course now with the aluminum cans it's not really available so much. Also it can be a pain to clean up the cans afterwards. I know a few people who like to make their own molds from sure-jell. So anyhow, What kind of fun targets do you like to use and any funny stories are always welcome........

I don't really use anything 'fun' other than reset targets, everything else is just a mess on the property. But when I went to Arizona and went shooting in the desert, there were all sorts of things abandoned. Our targets ranged from a television, a weed eater, a roll of duct tape unwound from a cliff, whiskey bottles, and a chest. Tons of fun.

Where I shoot only allows paper targets, although I might have to try some of the steel out at Elm Fork sometime. Someone mentioned that they just use paper plates. For the money, I think I might just go with those when all the bulls eye targets I have are used up.

Other than exploding fruit, there's nothing more rewarding than the "DING!" of shooting steel targets.

I shoot a lot of paper plates. The real cheap, thin white ones.

I print my own. That way I never run out, cheaper than dirt, and I can vary the images depending upon the mood I am in...

I've always wanted to try Necco Wafers as targets. Those little chalky dots are supposed to produce a very satisfying cloud of dust when hit with a lowly .22 round.

Fruitfly wings, because each fruitfly comes with two of them.
I know, you'll say "why not the feet since there are 6 of them on each fruitfly" ... but my tri-focals don't line up as well as when I was younger.


I also shoot paper pates, sometimes I splurge and put an orange/red dot (Avery Labels) on them.

friend and myself bought a couple swingers and we built a couple bigger ones. various placements, no work taping or stapling, and instant gratification

The range I mostly use has free silhouett, and bullseye targets so those see the most use. When I head out to the desert, I usually use old political signs (plastic board w/ metal support frame thingies - you know the type rust pretty much every political campaign uses these days) with whatever style of target is on hand. Sometimes those cheap NRA slow fire targets, sometimes pieces of 8 1/2" x 11" pieces of printer paper. I have some old cardboard I made into IPSC and IDPA Style of targets. That's pretty much it - maybe I'm kind of easy to please when it comes to targets.

I try to a avoid shooting anything glass or crazy like old appliances and stuff because the location I shoot at has a huge issue with illegal dumping. Folks go out there all the time and dump their trash and shoot at it -and it gets really bad out there. I don't want to have to clean up a big mess (everything that goes in comes back out) so I just tend to stick to simple old paper.

I'd love to shoot some tannerite one of these days though!

Favorite targets......



1 inch pasties for grouping out to 10M or so. 4 1 inch pasties beyond that.

8 inch steel plates, USPSA or IDPA targets for speed work and everything else.

Milk jugs filled with water. My son and SIL are in to the 'exploding' factor so they add a few drops of food coloring just for a better visual effect. We once used hanging water balloons, however, those little bits of plastic/rubber are just a pain in the rear to pick-up.

back in cali when we would shoot in the desert we would hang bowling pins from wood frames we built and they stood up pretty well. from 22lr to .30-06. they would "dance" around making it a fun reactive target.

I built a PVC target stand and drilled 3 holes in the top horizontal tube. Afterwards, I slid three clay bird holders into the holes and blasted away. The wife loves it!!!

When I lived in California , I used to be a member of a outdoor range that was lighted, and Thursday night was " fruit shoot " night. You could bring fruits/ vegetables and shoot them, it was a blast. Shooting potatoes under floodlights at night, that brings back good memories. These days, shooting a watermelon with my .454 is how I get my kicks, i do it about once year.
