To buy a Gen 4 G17. I told myself I'd never sell any guns. But I'm really wanting a G17. I just really love the 9mm cartridge. Saw a Gen 4 G17 today in FDE at my local gun store and I really want it. What to do, what to do? I have a 19 as my CCW and having both in 9mm would make buying ammo a breeze.

Don't get rid of the 21 just to streamline ammo.....

Don't get me wrong, I L-O-V-E my G17 and carry it all the time. Just put away $100 a month and treat yourself to one around new years.

I traded 2 Kimbers for a Kobra. At the time I thought I made a great move. Love my Kobra, still wish I had both my Kimbers. I also have a G17, G21 in Gen 4 and a G30 SF. Your initial gut is correct, never sell a 45.

Not really just to streamline ammo. Just something different I guess. Figure I could always pick up another G21 later on. Im still in college for at least 1 more year so funds are pretty tight.

I wish I could talk you out of it, but in your situation (college; limited funds) I would do the same... a box of 9mm is nearly half of a box of 45, so if $$$ are limited, switching to a 17 will allow you to shoot more for a lower cost.

I have a 17 Gen 3 and simply love it... my cost per box of 50 is $10, so I shoot the heck out of it every week.

My first Glock was a 17. Great gun, turned me into a fan. Unfortunately, I lost it when my house was destroyed during Hurricane Ike. Replaced it with a Glock 23 for a little more oomf. Now thinking about a 21. Guess the grass is always greener.

It's a gen 3 so what you get for it will be a lot less than you paid and you will lose money.

It's a point I've thought about haha. Very true. I was trying to rationalize it by figuring an extra mag and night sights as well as 600 rounds of .45 fmj's I should get pretty close to the cash for a gen 4 17 which comes with 3 mags.

You win. Haha. Guess I'll hold off. Should graduate in a year and maybe there will be a newer or different version of the 17 out by then.

The Gen 4 Glocks have had their share of problems. If I had a Gen 3 I would hang on to it. Just my thoughts.

If I had the extra $$$ I would help you complete your transformation, so I would have a pair of G21SF's, one for each hand.

Issues are issues, Not extracting can get you killed in a gunfight. I would wait on a Gen 4 Glock until all the issues are resolved.

I have a G30 SF and I would like to get a G19 now. I love shooting my wife's. I wouldn't get rid of the 45 though. Sometimes its nice to have options. The 19 can do most things the 17 does and you can use the 17 mags in the 19. I don't see much gain in getting the 17. Right now Glocks are having extraction issues that range from weak extraction to shooting the brass back at you face. It's a shame as they are a sound design. I don't know what changed. This problem is happening with new Gen3s and Gen4s. I wouldn't buy a G19 unless it had a serial prefix of M or earlier.

Some people have said they have had no problems with their new Gen 3s and 4s. Others say they don't have problems until they get up to 500-1,000 rounds. There is a long thread over on Glock Talk about how to fix the issue. Depending on the pistol some people have had success and others haven't. I have read about too many people sending their pistols to Glock to get it back saying either the problem was fixed or it was in spec only to keep having the same problems.

The G3 G21SF is in my opinion the most reliable, simplest functioning, most forgiving 45 made today. When our dept switched to issuing it 3 years ago, qualification scores went up remarkably.

Moving from a full size to a glock to a full size glock is not really a gun change, it is a caliber change. The perceived recoil on the G21SF is much less violent than almost any other pistol in that offering. It is a proven model with lots of LE buy in and high round count stories, the g4 models are getting there, but still kind of protype-ish in my mind based.

And if I may, allow to frame these comments in the light of me never really being a Glock "guy" per se. I've always liked 1911s much better, but I have been converted largely due to hours of training and thousands of rounds through this gun.

I find it is much better balanced with a light.

I too want a G17, but I want it for shooting competitions.
