Bought a Star model BM. Regretting it *Updated w Pics*

I went to my local pawn shop and left with a Star model BM. I was really hesitant to buy it and now that I have it, I'm regretting it. I wanted another 9mm and this one fit the 1911 profile. it was very small and compact and was in fairly decent condition. I haven't fired it yet. I rushed home to find out what I had bought and as I'm reading more about the gun, I want to hang myself for making an impulse buy. It's a hard chrome one with pearl grips. It does look like something that a Colombian drug lord with Gaudy tastes would wield. So.. As I know the majority of what your answers are going to be, I'll ask anyway. Did I make a bad choice?

As far as the appearance, I'd lose the grips.

Try shooting it first, you may find you like it. If you do like it and it works for you, then it was worth it.

I have two, including one just like yours. They are solid, reliable guns, accurate and with great triggers.
1911 holsters fit it. 4sgrips has some very nice grips if you don't like the faux ivory.
I think you should shoot it first.

I carried a Star Firestar in .40 with "Starvel" finish for several years, before any (good for my hands) polymer compact guns were available. It gave me no trouble and was good about digesting all kinds of ammo (FMJ, un-jacketed and JHP). It was all metal and super heavy compared to my carry gun today (HK P2000SK) but I don't have any other quibbles about it. Seemed to be reasonably well made.

I would concur with your assessment that your Star is a bit "blingy" . Other than that, give it a chance. You might find you like it.

I think its kind of a neat little pistol. And I concur with the others that a change in grips to something a little less flashy might make a world of difference. You got it at a pawn shop, you might as well run some rounds through it and see how you like it. It might surprise you, and hopefully it will. Good luck and have fun.

The only parts that people regularly need:

That detent spring and ball under the thumb safety. If you pull the grip the safety can rotate down, exposing the detent ball, which immediately launches itself across the room into the cat's litter box. Or into the place where lost socks go.

The other part is the firing pin, which will break if you make a habit of dry-firing it. Any gunsmith can repair the original, or make a new one.

Resist the urge to detail strip the BM. Occasionally things come apart much better than they go back together. This would be one of those occasions.
