I have saved up the cash so which AK47 should I look at getting? There are so many out there I would like some advice.Thanx to all that respond!

Best bet would be to ask around, possibly gun store/gun show--i've been eyeing an AR among other guns--sorry i'm of no help, but am curious as to why an AK rather then AR or type rifle--

Most any AK will do. I hear the Yugoslavian AKs have some non-standard parts, but since I don't have one, I can't confirm that. I do believe it to be from a reliable source though.

Most AKs will have a stamped receiver, which has served the world over in a reliable fashion. I wouldn't hesitate to pick one up. A friend found a deal on a Romanian AK with an aftermarket folding stock made in the US. It shot quite well and was reliable. I have a Norinco AK with a milled receiver that is stronger than the stampled sheet-metel version, but since almost all used in various wars fought around the world have a sheet metel receiver, I would have to say that you don't need the milled version. It's more expensive than the stampled sheet-metel version and is heavier too.

If it were me, I wouldn't hesitate to pickup a Romanian AK as I know they work well and cost around $350 last time I looked.

I agree...

Most of the versions that are "tricked" out might be ok to use, they perform like they all do...

Why mess with a good thing...

Try to find (new, of course) the ugliest, plain-jane, standard AK...No bells and whistled version, and go to town finding a few dozen magazines for it, over time of course...

And this aquisition would be the only time I would buy for it to eat the bulk ammo produced by various manufacturers to keep on hand...Like the Wolf brand stuff...

Already have an AR15 , Smith wesson mp15T VERY NICE Love it , Just thought it would be nice to get the "enemys" gun, I have a SKS but just dont like it.

I have a Romanian WASR-10, the cheapest of the bunch. I got mine at a show a few months ago for $325, "new". It's not the most elegant piece, but it blows through cheapo Wolf like there's no tomorrow, and actually hits where I aim. There are a bunch of 'em out there, mostly or all imported by Century Arms. If you want to spend more, you can do better, but other than asthetics, I don't know what they'll do better than mine. Use the extra money for mags and ammo and have a blast.

Has anyone tried a Chinese made one?
My friend is offering me one for a good price (under $250).
I was wondering about the quality though...

If it is a Norinco MAK 90 for under $250, jump on right now! Unless it is obviously messed up. Any other Chinese brand, I don't know about.

I have a Saiga, Russian made, very high quality and imported in with "sporting" use design
i.e., no pistol grip or high cap

easy to tweak to accept high caps
pistol grip a bit more involved
mine has the Draganov style rear stock which sort of skirts the pistol grip issue..

the Saigas are used as base units for several custom AK builders that sell for around a grand (krebs, tromix, etc) so, they are obviously well made

all I have done to mine is replace the front gas tube with an Ultimak sight mount. With it I have a red dot (30mm Ultradot) that cowitnesses with the factory sights

it's a fun gun to use and it's my go to gun for adverse conditions, i.e., night time hog hunting when it's bad weather..

I haven't modded it yet to take high cap mags though I do have a 20rd mag for it..

at 50 yards it's easy to keep all the rounds in a 3" shoot and see and at 75 yards "most" of them hit it

with a scope I bet it would do a bit tighter groups and I may try a scout style scope for it like a Burris or Leupold at some point..

Who is the company that builds them in the US? I ran across one at a gun store recently, and I can't remember who that manufacturer was.

They own the overseas factory where parts are produced then assembled over here.

An outstanding AK, BTW.

I, and almost everyone I know that shoots AK's recomends Vepr Rifles. Google and enjoy.

My uncle grabbed a Romanian one in the sub-400 dollar range. It came with some gimmicky stuff like a boyonet (fun to play with though).

Quality couldn't hold a candle to a vepr, but it is a good, relatively inexpensive toy for sure.
