Last night I attended a meeting where I ran into a political friend of mine...

His name is Tom Nixon, and he is the former HPD officer who was eventually let go because of his critism of the HPD's chase policies...Some of you may have heard, seen, or met him as well...

He recently ran for a Houston City Counsel seat and didn't make the cut to get into a run off for that position...He has since endorsed the candidate who is in the run off, and did so in my opinion in a very admirable manner...My hats off to him...

I actually ran into him the day before (this last Sunday) and saw that he has an affinity for issues in our community of Concealed Handgun Licencees...

He recently completed his law degree and has founded a service that caters to our CHL community in a manner that I believe is more "inclusive" of the entire legal "defense" process we may incur if we have to defend ourselves...

In my opinion this appears to be a slightly better service than the one I've seen lately (and over the last few years) that gives you a slap on the back, and "Good Luck" before you go into the Grand Jury by yourself...But thats just my opinion...

I wasn't asked to do this, nor am I associated other than our similar political affiliations outside of the Texas CHL community...

I believe in giving everyone as much information as possible and letting them decide if its worth pursuing...

If anything...Its another website worth bookmarking, right!!!

Somewhat OT, but I'm curious as to his rank and which side of the debate he was on?

In looking for details on their web site, I noticed that it seems to expect folks to committ at least $120 before being able to see how the "contract" is actually worded. I e-mailed requesting a copy of "the fine print" ...

He openly critisised the chase decisions by command. He thought the officers who were on the scene should have some discresion.he was particularly outspoken on Chris Bakers radio show. Most all of HPD is in silent agreement with him.

A little lacking on the information and fine details on the site. I wouldn't spend a dime unless I could comb the contract and had more information available.

Being in Dallas, I kind of wanted to have some idea of the attorneys they would use in Dallas. I will probably send them an email on that. Also wanted to know what kind of results they had so far.

Well I can understand if the lack of information, and details of how they actually do their part of the bargain could cause some hesitation..

From what I understand its a new service, I believe their is a network of attorneys that are buildig up this service...

But like y'all, I have not moved on this myself to be honest...

I think we'll all look at this, like we do all the things that pop in on us here...With cautious optimism...

As promised, here is the reply I received to my e-mailed questions:

Thank you for your interest in our legal services contract. The contract we are offering does cover the Texas licensed CHL holder for a wide range of legal issues that may arise. In the unfortunate event we have a contract holder involved in a self-defense shooting, our contract would offer coverage that is similar to the representation which police officers in the Houston Police Department receive from the Houston Police Officer's Union. This was my inspiration for setting up this service. I served as a Houston Police Officer for ten years before becoming a lawyer. Our CHL contract covers its members in both criminal as well as civil matters that may arise out of any self-defense/use-of-force situations. We feel that CHL holders in Texas should be entitled to this same quality level of representation that officers receive.

I realize it may sound too good to be true, but our business model is based on the law abiding CHL community in and around Harris County working together in a CHL Union, if you will... (Much like a Police Officer's Union.).

I ran into Tom last night and cut him a check...With the caveat that I hope I never have to holler at him to get me out of the pokey...

I don't know anything about this person's service. However, having be involved in court issues and knowing friends who have as well, I'd like to offer you this past history.

All lawyers are not equal and a bad lawyer can actually do a lot of damage to your case (sometimes the starting point of a case is very important). Flat fee lawyers are probably the worst (from my own experience and observations of friends' experiences); they seem to just want to get the case done with no matter the outcome. You should really interview any potential lawyer and check out what their performance in similar cases were. A lawyer local to the area has plus and minus depending on your case and may not be the best to hire, e.g. knowing the judge's past history/personality/golf is good, not wanting to push the opposing side very hard (business goes around and a local guy may not want to burn any bridges) isn't, etc.

I'd personally be a bit scared to use a pre-paid law service for something this important. I think pre-paid service is great for some realestate/rental issues, wills/trusts, traffic tickets, etc. But if I'm facing possible murder charges, I'd pay to get the best I can afford; just MHO.
