I've heard that Glocks can convert calibers by just swapping barrels, is that right?

I want to teach my teenage sons and daughter about pistols for self-defense. And teach them about gun safety.

I'd like to start them out using low muzzel velocity 9MM ammo in my Glock 23, instead of my .40 cal. models because of "easier recoil" than my usual 180 grain bullets(already pretty low velocity for .40 cal) .

Whatever brand conversion kit(or barrel) I get...everything Would need to operate flawlessly since my kids will be using those pistols, I would NOT want any glitches or jams!!!!

Does anyone know about this, please help me?

As far as I know, 40 caliber can be switched to 357 Sig by switching barrels only. Other conversios might need new magazines and ejectors.

You can swap Glock barrels between 40 S&W and 357SIG. But you need a conversion barrel made by an aftermarket company to shoot 9mm in a 40 or 357 Glock. Flawless, is another question. Bar-Sto conversion barrels @ $200 each would be the closest you could come. Storm Lake, on sale @ topglock.com for $98 would do for practice. NOBODY recommends carrying with a 9mm conversion barrel!!!!! The guns were not designed to do that!! So, since your 9mm conversion will be range only, flawless is not important. Malfunctions are part of practice too. When you use a 9mm conversion barrel it's best to use a 9mm magazine.
I have a Glock 33 (357SIG). I have a 40 S&W barrel and an EFK FireDragon 9mm conversion. I would not recommend the EFK barrel. I have read good things about the Storm Lake barrels on other boards, but I don't have one, yet.

You are certainly on the right track in wanting to start them with something that has reduced recoil. To this end, I always start new shooters with a .22 rimfire pistol. It is inexpensive to shoot, has low recoil, moderate noise level, and most are fairly accurate.

I started my daughter with a Ruger .22 caliber pistol, and when she was confident (and competent) with it, I moved her directly to a .45 acp with no problems.

A good used .22 pistol could be had for nearly the cost of the barrel you are talking about.

Just a thought.

(even though I had wanted to start with something a little larger than a .22)

i just bought an Advantage Arms 22LR law enforcement model which converts my glock 26 to a .22LR which is nice and fun to shoot! maybe you should look in to something along those lines.. i like it because i get to use the same grip on my G26 but shoot cheapper bullets

Or what about "Ported" barrels?
Do they work as advertised(cut recoil and muzzle flip up to 40%)??

+1 on these conversion kits - although cost almost as much as some .22s!
I'd avoid the Glock conversion kit made by Ceiner.

+1 on the conversion slide.

Make sure you follow the manufacturer's recommendations on ammunition, though, or you'll be getting lots of practice clearing malfunctions. CCI runs better for me than the cheap Remington 'golden bullet' ammo. Lots of failures to extract and failures to feed with the latter.

I shot a Ported Tactical XD .357Sig.
Very accurate, however you (and those beside and behind you) SWEAR that you are standing in FRONT of the muzzle. Noise levels from a ported gun will clear the stations next to you at the range.

Also, in the case of the Factory ported XD, I heard that they suffered from stress cracks in the slide.

Get a good .22 instead.

i use a cci 40 grain mini mags works great shoot about 200 rounds with out a problem and when im done with the 200 rounds for warmup i swap on the 9mm and keep on going!

I bought the LoneWolf conversion barrel to go from 357sig to 9mm. Way,way,way cheaper ammo. All I needed was glock 19 mags, got 2 of those at a show for 5 bucks each. Barrel was $89. $100 and i have a complete conversion.
