I disagree with the Uber decision/memo, but I don't see how it would have had made any difference in this situation. The driver wouldn't have been able to have a handgun in NYC to begin with.
If it were in TX, or any other gun-friendly area for that matter, it might have been labeled as the cause.

Is it possible that they originally reported he was an Uber driver and then corrected it? That would make sense....what would having once driven for Uber lend to the story.
