That makes me so angry that if i said what I first thought, it would violate the 10 year old daughter rule! Count to 10 and take a deeeeep breath! It sounds like the family is a strong and patriotic family with alot of vets who will be sure to teach him the real meaning of Memorial day, and they will be able to support the kid and not let this stupid teacher kill his sense of patriotism. :mad5

What a moronic response by the school system.

A friend sent me this in an email, and I feel that it is fitting for this thread:

**_Obituary of Common Sense_**

My parents told me about Mr. Common Sense early in my life and told me I

would do well to call on him when making decisions. It seems he was

always around in my early years but less and less as time passed by.

Today I read his obituary. Please join me for a moment of silence in

remembrance. For Common Sense has served us all so well for so many

generations.***

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who

has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was

since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.

He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as

knowing when to come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the

worm, life isn't always fair, and maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more

than you earn) and reliable parenting strategies (adults, not children

are in charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well intentioned but

overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a six-year-old boy

charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended

from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for

reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the

job they themselves failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.

It declined even further when schools were required to get parental

consent to administer Aspirin, sun lotion or a sticky plaster to a

student; but could not inform the parents when a student became pregnant

and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments became

contraband; churches became businesses; and criminals received better

treatment than their victims. Common Sense took a beating when you

couldn't legally defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the

burglar can sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to

realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in

her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust; his

wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason. He

is survived by three stepbrothers; I Know my Rights, Someone Else is to

Blame, and I'm a Victim.

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.

I think that rather than a lot of responses via the posted address, a well written letter from a lawyer is in order. :banghead:

Here are the facts about the mcdonalds coffee settlement.
FYI: http://www.lectlaw.com/files/cur78.htm

I would say people discussing things they know nothing about didnt help common sense's condition either.

The fact that they start their "facts" off with a statement that the coffee was not just hot, but scalding, raises my hackles a little. It makes it sound as though the liquid was super hot, while the fact is, the true fact, that even household temperature tap water can cause scald burns. The rest of the article suffers in that light.

I agree with the original poster - coffee was meant to be served hot, and coffee at 140 degrees soaked into sweat pants would as likely have caused injury to the tender domains on which it was spilled. The genital region is credited as 5% for burns, if I recall my EMT training correctly.

On other boards without the rules we have here, this would have served up a grand slam.

I fail to see where the previous poster said anything that is substantially in conflict with the facts of the case. From your own link...

"Liebeck placed the cup between her knees..."

I think that supports the gist of the previous poster's point.

not to get too far off topic but, genital region (perineum) accounts for 1%, added with inner thighs and buttocks, could possibly equal 6% of her body surface area. I have to wonder if that was truly 6% total thickness burns, or 6% total burned as in some total, some partial or superficial burns. Common sense says...coffee hot, dont spill, use cup holder if available...here's your sign.

Its a real shame that boy was chastized for being patriotic. I'm 26 and can vividly remember taking my military garb into class for presentations, for topic discussions, and just to show pride. It also wasnt a big deal to leave my shotgun in my truck's window after deer hunting before school either
