Realized today That I walked around without a magazine

Post by marksiwel »

Went to put my pistol by the bedside, and realzied I had walked around without a Magazine in the gun :banghead:
I had one in the chamber but its my Hi Power, so it has a magazine disconnect (I gotta get that removed), so I couldnt have even fired a shot if I wanted to.

I once went charging off for the day without even putting the gun in my holster. Just the feel of the IWB was enough, I didn't notice the weight difference at all, even tho I also carry a Hi Power, not one of the lightest guns around. It is one of the things I like about my comptac holster, usually.

However, when one does remember to get the gun in the first place, I use a little procedure I adapted from John Farnam's teachings on administrative gun handling. Basically, chamber check, holster, handsweep to make sure no clothing got caught inbetween gun/holster, remove magazine and check that it is charged, reinsert mag, give mag a good tug to make sure it is properly seated.

And yes, get rid of the magazine disconnect. If you are confident of your skills, you can DIY -- I went to Alex Hamilton in San Antonio (and got the action smoothed and the trigger set to 5 lbs).

Best wishes!

Check your gear, double check your gear then check it again. You still may miss something but the chances of it being major are slim.

Take the magazine disconnect out of that HiPower it improves the trigger pull. I won't carry a gun with a magazine disconnect.

That's one reason the only time I remove a mag is when it's time for that guns 60 day rest cycle in the safe. The one in the carry holster is always charged and ready with a spare mag or two and they are next to the cell and keys.

I never take the magazines out of my carry guns except to recharge them, or to show a gun to someone. Otherwise, they are kept loaded all the time. The only exceptions to this rule are the safe queens, which are stored unloaded. Even so, I assume they are loaded until I have verified otherwise.

But I have 3 guns (+2 BUGs) in my carry rotation, and none of those three gets stored in the safe, and they are all kept loaded at all times.

I figure that by doing it that way I eliminated all wondering if a gun is loaded or not. I just assume that it is....

...and then I check just to make sure.

Like AndyC's sig line says, pros don't skip safety checks.

Interesting - I've been diligent about always assuming the gun is loaded, but I haven't been ensuring that it is. Maybe that should be a 5th rule for folks that carry.

Glad you feel like the picture. Let me see said the old wore out broke up cowboy.
That is a pretty good looking Quarter Horse. Broad across the hips is quick out of the box for a roper or just as quick to turn back a stubborn steer while working a cattle in a sale ring.
I can see well fed & just enough of a right side withers to know a saddle wont role if you dally a big steer.
Small ears so probably a good head. Im guessing mare. Papers??? Good lookin horse either way.

You could feel like a lot worse. :thumbs2:

Yep. The magazine never leaves my Hi-Power, except at the range, during cleaning, or when I pick it up after setting it down. Then I do a press check, pull the mag to make sure they're all still there, then stick it back in and holster it.
