Gun was being played with by a 17 year old in an apartment while mom was at work.

Went off just at the point the gun had pointed itself at the 15 year olds head.

I’m always amazed that the gun knows how to do that.

I learned at an early age never point a gun unless you plan on using it. I was young and had a BB gun, thought it was empty. Pointed it at my parakeet in her cage and pulled the trigger, smashed her mirror.

Probably one of those smart guns Bloomie wants to force on non-cops.

Repeat after me: 1st rule, the gun is always loaded!

Now this young man has to bear the burden of killing another person because of carelessness!

As a young child I was taught gun safety. In the house I grew up in all of the guns and ammo were mine and stayed in my closet (.22,9mm, .357, 30-30) from the age of about 8. OK, .22 at 8, .357 at 11, 9MM and 30-30 in my teens.

But I learned early and quickly that they are not toys! They do not get "played with" and y0ou never mix the guns and the ammo! It was a different world back then.

Apparently the DA didn’t buy the gun pointed itself at a 15 year olds head and it then magically went off by itself. They have charged the 17 year old with manslaughter.

Unloaded guns cannot fire, plain and simple, so the gun was definitely NOT unloaded.
ALWAYS keep your muzzle pointed in a safe direction.
ALWAYS keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.
ALWAYS keep firearms open and empty until ready to use them.

ALL three rules broken, with predictable, tragic results.

Probably belongs to the mom and didn't do a good job of teaching her son that guns are not toys and they can kill you or someone else.

The news story now says that the gun belonged to the "shooter".
Pardon my ignorance but can a 17-y/o legally own a gun?

Does anybody have any insight whether these were just "nice kids" or whether it was just some wannabe gangbangers pointing Glocks at each other sideways?
This is my summation.

More unloaded guns kill people then you could imagine, one time i checked my Wilson 1911 CQB the slide was even locked backed from the last shot and thought it was empty. The bad thing is il learned a habit from my uncle who would always aim at his hand to dry fire the gun. He stated it was just in case if the gun does go off it will hit him first, just in case it hit someone. I know it doesn't make sence, but I was 16-17yo at the time. "Impressionable" for some strange reason I thought not this time and it went off outside at least. Man that was a long time ago 🖑🔫

Based in the information available, I could vote for guilty on this. Guess they felt they could not show intent.

In my first week of working in the ER, we had two kids killed by gun stupidity. On my very first shift, it was a 12 year old boy. He and his brother had found their dad's .22 rifle in a closet. They had a tug 'o war over the rifle to determine which one was going to play with it first. The kid at the muzzle end lost, and took a round at contact distance right into his descending aorta. He came in under CPR, and we cracked his chest, but no cigar. He’d already bled out. The second one was later in the week and much like the OP's story..... a teenaged boy—the son of a cop—and his cousin found the boy's father's backup piece, a little .380. Believing the gun to be unloaded, he pointed it at his cousin's head in jest.....and this is where the stupidly reaches Ludicrous Level....the cousin dares him to pull the trigger.....and he actually pulls it. The result was a nice neat hole dead-center of the victim's forehead, and an exit wound behind his left ear with a lot of gray matter leaking out of it. I use the term "victim" loosely, since he was stupid enough to actually dare the kid to pull the trigger. The kid who shot him has to live with this now, but it’s hard to feel sorry for someone that stupid.

Evolution is a harsh mistress.

If we would just totally ban firearms in this country, stupid deaths would decrease to zero....right? [/sarcasm]
