My Hal-PC hosted DSL seems to be dying.

Does anyone have a suggestion?

It was down two days last week.

Down again this morning.

And

Now, it is so slow that the Internet Speed Test failed to load.

I like cable modem. I like it even more since we switched to AT&T uVerse. Even with fiber optic DSL, it's not near as fast uploading files as cable modem. Surfing the 'Net seems just as fast, but I upload a good number of files.

I've been happy with Verizon DSL. I don't upload files, so I have no idea about speed. Downloading and surfin' speed is fast enough for me.

Everybody's gonna have an opinion about this one. "What caliber is your ISP?"

I used Time Warner Cable (pre-Comcast) for several years, and while the speed was great, I'd experience outages at least every 60 days. Finally gave up and went with AT&T DSL...the Platinum or Elite (or whatever) residential service. There's a throttle on the uploads (I think it's about 380Kbps, but AT&T uses upload compression and pretends it's over 600Kbps), but the download side consistently performs around 5Mbps.

Been using 'em for a couple of years now, and what's been most important to me is that only once have I had to contact them about an outage. Once in 24 months is a darned sight better than once every 2 months. So I'm happy for now.

I think one key about selectiong an alternative provider may be whether or not you can bundle costs based on services you already have.

Luck!

:iagree: That was not a factor in my decision. For three months, after I moved to a new house, Time-Warner kept billing me for cable services at my previous residence. Eventually they turned me over to a collection agency for not paying for services that I did not use. I could never talk to anyone who would correct the problem so I refuse to do business with Time-Warner or whatever they currently call themselves. :mad5

I had Time Warner for a long time, and just switched over to AT&T Uverse. I got tired of them charging me $50 everytime I want to move service. I like my Uverse. It's not as fast as cable, but it is much more consistent than cable. :hurry:

I was also very impressed to see that we had both TV and Internet access the moment we got power back after Ike. I know a lot of Comcast customers who didn't.

Glad to hear it. ;-) And, Whole-Home DVR is coming soon (if you haven't already gotten it.)

The advantage on U-Verse is it is powered from the neighborhood VRAD/RT. We had TONS of folks, many working literally 24 hours a day, manning generators in the areas to make sure the service was on-line and working down to the homes once they got power restored.
