How to return Start button/sessions to horizontal from vert?

Today, I was just websurfing along and without any knowledge of how this
happened, my laptop changed itself up in a way I don't like.

I have a Sony Vaio laptop PC with Windows XP.

WHAT I HAD AND WAS USED TO:
My Windows "START" button was in the lower left corner of my screen.
As I would add Internet sessions or had a Word session open, the tabs would
extend from left to right across the bottom of the screen. Each tab has enough
text from the session's description to ID the website easily.

WHAT THE SYSTEM DOES NOW THAT I DON'T LIKE:
The Windows "START" button is now at the top left of the screen.
Each Word or Internet session tab is a tiny truncated square.

I belieive this is something that should be easy to change, but I just don't
know where the maintenance area for this is.

Any assistance appreciated. SIA

right click an empty spot in the task bar and make sure its not locked

then click that empty spot and drag it where you want I believe.

That's right... on the off chance you haven't fixed it already, just drag the bar back where it belongs.
