The headline in the this article claims that Obama supports individual gun rights. He has claimed the same thing is speeches. But then he goes on to support Washington DC's ban on guns, the legal theory of which is that the 2nd Amendment addresses rights of militias, not rights of individuals. And Obama was constitutional law instructor!! This is the height of deceit both by Obama and the media.

MILWAUKEE - Barack Obama said Friday that the country must do "whatever it takes" to eradicate gun violence following a campus shooting in his home state, but he believes in an individual's right to bear arms.

Obama said he spoke to Northern Illinois University's president Friday morning by phone and offered whatever help his Senate office could provide in the investigation and improving campus security. The Democratic presidential candidate spoke about the Illinois shooting to reporters while campaigning in neighboring Wisconsin.

The senator, a former constitutional law instructor, said some scholars argue the Second Amendment to the Constitution guarantees gun ownerships only to militias, but he believes it grants individual gun rights.

"I think there is an individual right to bear arms, but it's subject to commonsense regulation" like background checks, he said during a news conference.

He said he would support federal legislation based on a California law that would facilitate immediate tracing of bullets used in a crime. He said even though the California law was passed over the strong objection of the National Rifle Association, he thinks it's the type of law that gun owners and crime victims can get behind.

Five people, including the shooter, were killed during Thursday's ambush inside a lecture hall. Authorities said the two guns used were purchased legally less then a week ago.

"Today we offer them our thoughts and prayers, but we also have to offer them our determination to do whatever it takes to eradicate this violence from our streets, from our schools, from our neighborhoods and our cities," Obama said. "That is our duty as Americans."

Although Obama supports gun control, while campaigning in gun-friendly Idaho earlier this month, he said he does not intend to take away people's guns.

At his news conference, he voiced support for the District of Columbia's ban on handguns, which is scheduled to be heard by the Supreme Court next month.

"The notion that somehow local jurisdictions can't initiate gun safety laws to deal with gang bangers and random shootings on the street isn't born out by our Constitution," Obama said.

Obama also:

• Said Clinton now is attacking him for watering down a bill to regulate the nuclear industry that she also voted for and touted on her Web site. He suggested her attack was made out of desperation because his campaign is ahead.

"I understand that Senator Clinton, periodically when she's feeling down, launches attacks as a way of trying to boost her appeal," he said. "But I think this kind of gamesmanship is not what the American people are looking for."

• Seemed to hedge on his statement last year that he would accept public funds if his Republican opponent did as well. Likely GOP nominee John McCain has said he would adhere to such an agreement, but Obama was not willing to make such a firm commitment.

"If I am the nominee, then I will make sure that our people talk to John McCain's people to find out if we're willing to abide by the same rules and regulations with respect to the general election going forward," Obama said. "But it would be presumptuous of me to say now that I'm locking myself into something when I don't even know if the other side is going to agree to it and I'm not the nominee yet."

• Blamed problems with the economy on a "failure of leadership in Washington" that includes decisions by the Bush administration on taxes and the Clinton administration on trade. He criticized "politicians (who) tout NAFTA as a success when they're in the White House and then call it a mistake when they're on the campaign trail."

• Said he has not considered whether he would give up his Senate seat if he wins the presidential nomination.

This sentence, to me, says all I need to hear. It always gets my hackles up when I hear a politician say I have a "right to bear arms". In other words...I have a right to carry arms in defense of my country or fellow citizens as a member of the military or police.

As most on this board know, that's NOT what the 2A is about.

The real problem with Obama's statement is that it is at best a half truth. Sure, he favors "commonsense regulations like background checks". And if that was the extent of it, that would be no problem for gun owners. (Even the NRA backs the NICS instant check system.)

But we all know that Obama backs far more than background checks. He also supports the DC gun ban for instance. He has also voted to support every piece of gun control / gun ban legislation that has come before him both in the IL Senate and the US Senate.

So right there, we see that his "individual right" view of the 2A is meaningless.

If he will lie about this, what else will he lie about?

If Mr. "Hope and Future" Obama would kindly provide us with any instance of an actual gun being violent then I am certain there would be more of us supporting his stance.

If there is anything I would not want it would be a violent gun.

I could just imagine me, placidly driving down the road in my Super Duty, diggin' on the tunes (Skynnyrd's "Saturday NIght Special"), sippin on a Dr Pepper, chewin' on some jerk (peppered, not that terriyaki stuff), when all of a sudden my gun just goes stinkin' ballistic! You know how gun violence is when you see it. That gun just points at the moron in the laft lane driving 10 mph under the limit with his cell phone pasted to his head and left turn signal on - whole magazine just rips off from my Kimber.

I wouldn't know what to do!

Reminds me of that car movie with Cissy Spasek (sp?) - "Christine". Now that movie was one good example of car violence, yessir!

Inanimate objects turning violent. There ought to be a law.

Why do supposedly intelligent people listen to these candidates?

Obama and Gun Control:
His record isn't likely to win back the rural "pro-gun" voters who've fled to the Republicans in recent years, likely costing Gore the election in 2000. From the Chicago Defender, Dec. 13, 1999:

Sweeping federal gun control legislation proposed by Sen. Barack Obama (D-13th) would increase the penalties on gun runners who are flooding Chicago's streets with illegal weapons.

At an anti-gun rally held at the Park Manor Christian Church, 600 E. 73rd St., headed by the Rev. James Demus, Obama also said he's backing a resolution being introduced into the City Council by Alds. Toni Preckwinkle (4th), Ted Thomas (15th), Leslie Hairston (5th) to call for a "shot-free" millennium celebration.

Obama outlined his anti-gun plan that includes increased penalties for the interstate transportation of firearms. The maximum penalty now for bringing a gun across the border is 10 years in prison. Obama is proposing to make it a felony for a gun owner whose firearm was stolen from his residence which causes harm to another person if that weapon was not securely stored in that home. [!!!]

He's proposing restricting gun purchases to one weapon a month and banning the sale of firearms at gun shows except for "antique" weapons. Obama is also proposing increasing the licensing fee to obtain a federal firearms license.

He's also seeking a ban on police agencies from reselling their used weapons even if those funds are used to buy more state-of-the-art weapons for their agencies. Obama wants only those over 21 who've passed a basic course to be able to buy or own a firearm.

He's proposing that all federally licensed gun dealers sell firearms in a storefront and not from their homes while banning their business from being within five miles of a school or a park. He's also banning the sale of 'junk" handguns like the popular Saturday Night Specials.

Obama is requiring that all people working at a gun dealer undergo a criminal background check. He's also asking that gun manufacturers be required to develop safety measures that permit only the original owner of the firearm to operate the weapon purchased.

Additionally, he wants an increase of the funds for schools to teach anger management skills for youth between the ages of 5-13. Obama is also seeking to increase the federal taxes by 500 percent on the sale of firearm, ammunition [sic] -- weapons he says are most commonly used in firearm deaths.



What's left of an individual's right to bear arms with these proposals? Nothing.

It's interesting that he says we must do "whatever it takes" to eradicate gun violence. What it will take is allowing citizens to defend themselves. Therefore, what he has to do to make good on this promise if elected is to tear down most if not all of his home state's gun control laws and preempting the local regs, thus alienating himself from the liberal electorate who would put him in office.

Very interesting... Methinks there is a Catch-22 here.
