C-dub's daughter's first IDPA match
Good evening everyone.
Today, my 11y old daughter shot her first IDPA match. Because of her age, the guys let her shoot a .22 today. I got her a Colt Gold Cup 1911-22 a couple months ago and we've practiced quite a bit. When she's able to handle a 9mm I'll get us one.
Her match score was higher than mine, but she was very smooth and surprised everyone today. She lost fewer points than I did.
Very proud papa here!

None of that for her today. And she only shot one hostage, but it went through their shoulder and hit the BG behind them.

Sounds like acceptable collateral damage.C-dub wrote:None of that for her today. And she only shot one hostage, but it went through their shoulder and hit the BG behind them.
Congrats to her and good on you for getting her involved young. I'm hoping my daughter and child to be named later will take a similar interest.

Hostages that get hit naturally should have ducked!
We have an 8ish year old gal who regularly competes with her grandpa at the Austin IDPA events. IIRC she even has a pink holster and mag pouches (shoots and M&P 22). Congrats.

EXCELLENT!!! Congratulations, and good job to both of you!C-dub wrote: Her match score was higher than mine, but she was very smooth and surprised everyone today. She lost fewer points than I did.

IDPA/action pistol shooting is so much more than a fun way to shoot your gun--I firmly believe that the local clubs provide a public service in that we offer shooters an opportunity to handle their guns in a way that most basic marksmanship and range training simply can't. The dynamic situations, and artificial stress of the timer really works wonders on the "administrative" and "practical" side of gun handling.
That there wasn't a day of constant "muzzle" and "finger" calls speaks highly of the training you have provided her thus far. Many many experienced shooters, those who "should know better" who are extremely safe gun handlers at the range just fall apart in practical scenarios.
And for any who are wondering about using a .22, I can't really come up with any reason I wouldn't allow it, especially for a young person, and I think most clubs would feel the same--at least in club matches -- it's about handling the gun, hitting the target, and having fun...not getting caught up in power factors and equipment technicalities.
Be proud, Papa. You've earned it!!

Congrats. Glad to hear she did well and you are teaching her well. Nice to have someone to carry on the tradition.....especially if they are girls. My 13yo daughter is of a similar mindset as your girl. Makes me proud. I find her tactical awareness to be greater than many adults I know.

As long as there's no official score or ranking from an IDPA standpoint, I don't see any problems with letting anybody shoot the course of fire with a .22 pistol off the record.cbunt1 wrote:And for any who are wondering about using a .22, I can't really come up with any reason I wouldn't allow it, especially for a young person, and I think most clubs would feel the same--at least in club matches -- it's about handling the gun, hitting the target, and having fun...not getting caught up in power factors and equipment technicalities.
