Informal IDPA / Tactical Shooting

Hey Guys, I will try to keep it short.

1. Is there anyone at PSC who can tutor someone wanting to get involved in IDPA shooting before actually going to a match ?
2. Is there anyone or several at PSC that might like to get together maybe one evening a week to practice and run through some basic informal setups ?
3. Tactical instruction would also be nice but i think alot of this can over lap each other

I'm wanting to become more proficient with my shooting and would find it helpful to be able to pick some brains and learn from the vast knowledge that is out there !!! (stay on topic guys) Plus this will free up some of our weekends also. Just thought i would throw this out there to see if anyone is interested.
I have alot of questions but don't want to take up space here.

There probably are some who can help you. Since I am in Austin, I couldn't really give too much info on that.

On the other hand, I can tell you that you really do not need special tutoring to shoot at an IDPA match. Our club, Texas Tactical, gives a new shooters meeting or orientation and I am confident that PSC does to at each match.

Generally, new shooters attends this meeting which gives general instructions and they are encouraged to ask more experienced shooters throughout the match if questions arise. Also, many groups have the new shooters write "NEW" on their scoresheet so that they are not required to shoot early in the shooting order.

Other than being safe, there is no pressure put on you to perform other that what you put on yourself. Shoot at your own safe and accurate speed.

There is a another similar thread below entitled "casual competition and learning what's available" . There is a fair description of wha to expect. Basically don't worry about just showing up ready to shoot. It really won't be that big of a deal and you will have a good time with some nice folks.

As for your actual request, I am sure some of the nice PSC folks will be chiming in soon.

Send a PM to SRVA. He will be running a class for men Saturday, August 1st at PSC, 9AM to noon. He covers the basics of shooting and IDPA. If you aren't familiar with him he is a 4 gun Master in IDPA, an NRA instructor and a pretty cool guy.

This class is run at the same time as the class for women in the adjacent shooting bay.

Thanks CWOOD. I know you don't have to have any experience to shoot a match and i know PSC is very accommodating to newcomers as well. but I am looking for that personal time to hone my skills and benefit from others in an informal setting prior to competing.

SRVA's class is the best deal you're gonna get for a beginner. I would take it if I could and I've been shooting IDPA for a couple years now.

As for informal training/practice, the best bet is one of the weekly evening practice matches at TTS, Shiloh, WHIDPA, Top gun, Memorial Shooting center, 59 Gun Range. I have and do participate at both TTS on Wensday and Shiloh on Thurs and like both groups. In addition TTS-IDPA has practice sessions Sat and Sun morning when there is not a match scheduled (see the web site for times)

PSC is south of Houston in Friendswood/Pearland.
TTS is just north of Woodlands.
Shiloh is in Willowbrook/Champions area.

Absolutely, there is shooting involved. It is a shooting class for men covering all basic skills needed for your first IDPA match. Generally the men go through about 150-200 rounds.

The class is $15 for non-members and $10 for PSC members. Sign-in and payment for the class is done in the Bay A. The class is in Bay B.
