what kind of holsters do people use? suggestions. Also mag carriers? not looking for $100 ones but are blackhawk or cheaper ones OK. I know about the IDPA list of approved. looking for more suggestions on what works to reduce my holster collection

I bet my competative IDPA game on Comp-tac and I bet my life on Comp-tac.

That's what I use for IDPA and that's what I use for daily carry.

I'll be shooting a Glock 19 and already have a crossbreed that will work correct? Or is it better to have OWB holster? Will be asking lot of questions this Sat at my 1st match.

Good IWB holster is fine for IDPA (also legal <g>) and great for CHL.

As you start to play the game (IDPA) you will find that the IWB holster might be just a bit slower during the draw, but depending on why you play the game.....well, it might be fine. If you are working on your CHL skills and want to get better, then stay with what you have. If your mindset is on winning the game, then you might want to get a belt holster at some future date.

That's a good combination I use a crossbreed and an M&P for both carry and IDPA. You don't have to spend a fortune to have gear that will perform. I like the Blackhawk Magazine carriers but, an inexpensive Fobus will do the job also.

That's what I'm thinking starting out better my self defense/chl skills then if like it get more into the game portion

Most of what you need for IDPA, many CHL folks already have, or should have.
Eye protection,
Ear Protection,
A garment for concealment,
A couple of extra magazines or speed loaders
Something to carry the mags or loaders,
A sidearm 38 Special or 9mm or larger
A strong side belt holster.
A willingness to learn and get better.

Thanks so do I really need a vest for concellment? Was going to wear long shirt that you'll be unable to see w/ arms raised. Have a light jacket bringing just in case but will be hot.

I am currently sitting in a mcdonalds (I wouldnt eat here...did the subway thing and brought it here. my kids and wife at this ungodly garbage though) wearing my kholster with my 9mm hi-point. My 1911 kholster was just delivered (I am going to the ft worth gun show saturday to purchase my long awaited RIA tactical 1911 (.45), get my grips and probably the crimson trace (sorry, gotta brag).

This is my first 1911 and I am sooooooo happy to be finally getting it. It will be my primary carry weapon as my 9mm will be retired to my safe.

Anyway, just got the new kholster today and love it. Go to http://www.kholster.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and select your gun. They are about $40 and have a lifetime warranty on them EVEN if you modify them. Check em out. I love mine!!

You do not NEED a vest. An untucked shirt, a tucked shirt if you want, a jacket, a long T-shirt all can work for concealment. Do keep in mind that the weapon and ammunition carriers (mags or speed loaders) also need to be concealed.

The nice thing about a vest is that it often gives you extra pockets to stow magazines in a reload situation, which can be handy. I got a Woolrich light weight vest for IDPA and ended up wearing nearly all the time as everyday wear just because it was comfortable. But I have also worn western vests for casual wear. Even a lightweight fabric (non-tactical) garment can work for everyday or IDPA.

The nice thing about IDPA is that you can use everyday gear to compete. It does not require a lot of "special" or "tactical" stuff to participate effectively. Obviously, pulling up a shirt to draw or fetch a magazine is slower than sweeping aside a shooter's vest, and if your concentration is on winning the game you will want to get appropriate gear. If your goal is to improve your skills using your everyday carry rig (within certain rule restrictions) you will be pleased with that too. You will uncover any weaknesses in your carry method at the range rather than when your life is on the line.

If I'm racing my 1911, I stick with the Kramer IWB (it's the only holster that I own for the Kimber). For the G19 though, I will switch from my carry Kramer IWB to a Blade-Tech OWB and dual mag pouch.
