IDPA and such. Is it possible to win things as prizes? I would think at national levels but how about even local events? Thanks......

IDPA is a "trophy only" sport as are most NRA competitions I've participated in. If they have a prize table, the prizes are awarded by luck of the draw not shooting ability.

It does depend on which variety you're shooting. For IDPA, since that's what I shoot, it is forbidden to give performance based prizes at matches. They award trophies at sanctioned matches for for 1st, 2nd, 3rd place winners, etc, but no prizes. Instead of performance prizes, regional and state matches usually have prizes, which can be pretty nice, that are given out by random drawing.

I figure at least for now, that's my best chance of actually winning something

USPSA and IPSC do award performance prizes, but are also much more competitive that IDPA.

GSSF has cash a pistol prizes based on performance and luck of the draw. The down side is that you can only compete with stock Glocks. Not that anything is wwrong with Glocks or anything thats just all they allow.

USPSA matches have prizes. Not usually at local matches, but when you go to bigger matches you can win anything from a gun cleaning kit to a gun, a nice one.
