Glock Conversion and IDPA

#1

Post by thatguy »

For anyone who cares...I have made the switch from a Sig 229 to a Glock 17. Dont get me wrong, I love my Sig, after all I have had her for almost 15 years with only a few stopages. The major difference between the two is that a Glock can be modified in so many ways, for instance the trigger. Try to buy a "drop in" trigger for a Sig.

That being said, what kind of trigger can I install on my Glock and still be IDPA legal? Also, can I install a mag release extension, slide release ext and a mag well extension (this adds about 5.5 ounces to the gun)?

Lastly, which brands would yall use or already use? I have found some triggers for 150 dollars and then others for 15 dollars. Whats the diff?

Thanks, Brian

I have the Challenger from http://idpa.pistolscores.com/scores/11. Very nice trigger and SSP legal. You're more than welcome to try it out the next time I'm there.

Yes on the Glock extended mag release and slide release. With both of those you'll stay in SSP as they are stock Glock parts.

The mag well will move you to ESP, but if this is your carry gun do you really want a mag well anyway?

I have an extra extended mag release that I brought with me last night, but alas you weren't there. I was going to leave it on your desk but couldn't find anyone to unlock your office for me. It is in my bag so unless you need it yesterday don't go out and buy one. I'm sure I'll see you soon.

Oh, and many people change the sights. I've kept mine stock. I like the big white dot. Get it on target, line up the top, see a little light on each side in the notch, and squeeze the trigger. Works great for me.

Thanks Jeff, I will take you up on trying the Challenger trigger, just to get a feel for it. This is nothing that has to happen today, I can make the gun work just fine the way it is. I am excited on being able to "customize" my pistol, again, not something one can do to a Sig very easily.

When you have time, maybe you can show me how the sights are supposed to work, we are talking about the little bumps on top of the slide right?:

Thanks again for the help,

Brian

If your within seven yards just put that big white dot on center of mass on your target and squeeze the trigger like Jerry Micheleck. We ran a "Bill Drill" type stage at last night's match. At seven yards draw from concealment and engage target with six rounds. Pulled it off in 2.57 seconds, zero down. Next time I'll show you how to do it, just don't ask me to repeat it.

If you want to shoot in Stock Service Pistol, you need to have your gun setup so there are "no visible external modifications". So if your trigger does not look like a Glock factory trigger, you can't shoot it in SSP. You are allowed to have grip tape or a slip-on grip sock (not considered permanent modification).

If you have any visible external modifications, you have to shoot in Enhanced Service Pistol.

I would recommend just getting a "-" disconnector for around $15 instead of a $100 plus trigger and using the $ you saved to buy some Ameriglo Defoor sights. While some people like stock Glock sights, I can't stand them. Glock front sights are .160 wide and the rear notch is .135. Yes, the post is wider than the notch. The only reason that you see any open area around the post is because of the difference in distance from your eye. When you add in the goofy white box on the rear sight, you get a busy, confused sight picture that is not as accurate, takes longer for your brain to process and is slow to shoot.

Contrast it with the 10-8 sight picture below the Glock. The front post is narrower, the rear notch is wider, you can see lots of light around the post and it's a much cleaner, clearer and faster sight picture. I don't have a picture of the Ameriglo Defoors but they have the same proportions and are much cheaper than the 10-8 sights (around $50 for a set).

Modifying your gun can be fun and very helpful. I'm just sharing what I have found through 14 years of shooting IDPA.
