IDPA Rule question

I am on a server that limits my access and bans all websites gun related. But I can get on here; funny. Anyway I am new to IDPA and looking to purchase a new firearm that I would like to see if it is on the approved list. If it were another SA XD or Glock I wouldn't ask but it is an STI. Is there a list that someone can email me or post in this thread with approved handguns?

FWIW, I am looking at an STI Edge in 9mm or a Tactical 50 in 9mm. I don't need it by anymeans, I have plenty of others that are simple like an XD or Glock. I am just looking for another shooter and if I can use it in IDPA all the better.

Thanks in advance.

Your basic Glock can be used in Standard Service Pistol. XDs, however, must be fired, at a minimum, in Enhanced Service Pistol. You know that, but a lotta people miss it until they register at a match, so I thought I'd mention it.

There is no comprehensive list of IDPA-approved handguns. The rules only describe, in each Division, what is expressly allowed and, kinda like the law, what is expressly disallowed.

For those wondering about STI, their Website will tell you which of their firearms are approved for what type of (popular) competition. Since you can't hit their site, here's the bad news: neither the Edge nor Tactical 50 are approved for IDPA. IPSC/USPSA, you're good to go.

To my knowledge, and don't necessarily take it as fact, of the STI double-stacks only the Eagle 5.0 (with a bushing, not a bull-barrel) is approved for IDPA. You have more choices in STI single-stacks.

:iagree:

I think the barrel configuration is the big thing to watch for on STI guns being IDPA compatible - bushing barrels only are allowed. Seems pointless to exclude a type of barrel that many folks use on their EDC 1911s in a game that purports encourage use of "real carry guns".

As an aside, this is one of many 1911-centric complaints I have with IDPA rules - more broadly, CDP class should be renamed JMB class as the rules for this division are specifically written to favor only guns fitting - for the most part - the original M1911 design. Even the CDP magazine capacity limit of 8 rounds (instead of 10 in the other two semi-auto divisions) is obviously written for benefit of full-size, single-stack 1911s. The 10-round limit in SSP and ESP (as pointless as it seems on the surface with most guns used in these divisions holding 15-plus rounds in their standard-capacity mags) at least has a legitimate basis in allowing folks living in socialist nanny states (Massachussetts, Kalifornia) with standard-capacity magazine bans to compete on a level playing field. The only 'leveling" of the playing field done by the CDP 8-round limit is make sure the 100-year-old 1911 design can compete in its own class against newer polymer-frame, double-stack .45 ACP rivals like Glock, H&K, and S&W and even double-stack 1911s.

And of course to ensure there is a classification in Mr. Wilson's game that will most benefit the types of guns that Mr. Wilson sells :evil2:

Gents,

Thanks for the responses.

I found a way to get to STIs site and did see where they tell you what classes each gun is able to compete in. Looks like I might go with a bushing barreled Eagle 5.0.
