Upcoming Class Help
i've seen a lot of you guys mention that during your chl class you wish some other topics/things had been discussed or you had asked questions that only came to you afterwards, but no one really goes into what those things are... let's get into what those questions and topics are to help me & others who will be taking classes soon and in the future...

Re: Upcoming Class Help
Well, most of the 12,334 topics on this forum are about something that somebody felt was not fully covered during their class.
One issue sticks in my mind as very confusing: There are some infractions of the rules that are not criminal offenses but will get your license suspended. Failing to change your address is one. Another is failing to return a non-semi-auto (NSA) license if you qualify for an SA and get a new license (something that happens rarely).
You can get two suspensions this way. If you commit a third infraction, your license can be revoked.
Is this material still on the test, anyone?

Jim, there is a test question or two about suspensions;seamusTX wrote:Well, most of the 12,334 topics on this forum are about something that somebody felt was not fully covered during their class.

Here it is easy;
Fail to report address or name change= 30 days
Carry on wrong category(NSA vs SA)= 30 days
Fails to return with modified license= 30 Days
Fail to display to LE= 90 days
The 3 adminstrative charges other than fail to display are 30 day first offense
The only 90 day first offense is Fail to display
Then your license can be suspended for 1 to 3 years for a violation if you have ONCE been suspended for the same violation.
You can be revoked for the same violation after 2 suspensions for the same violation.

Re: Upcoming Class Help
Your license can be suspended if you're charged with a class A or B misdemeanor. Even if you didn't commit a criminal offense and are found not guilty, if it happens enough times it seems like your license could be revoked.seamusTX wrote:One issue sticks in my mind as very confusing: There are some infractions of the rules that are not criminal offenses but will get your license suspended.
Also remember that changing your name or address falls under 411.181 and modifying from NSA to SA falls under 411.184. I hear DPS wants you to return the old license if you change your address but the law doesn't require it. 411.187 says they can suspend it for not returning a modified license as required by 411.184(d) which is NSA to SA only.
We're here. With gear. Get used to it.

DPS will reinstate the license if the charges are dropped or you are found not guilty. It remains suspended until the disposition of the case.aardwolf wrote:Your license can be suspended if you're charged with a class A or B misdemeanor. They can also do it for being charged with a violation under Texas PC 42.01
DPS never asks for the return of an old license when the re-issue for name or address change. Also remember that changing your name or address falls under 411.181 and modifying from NSA to SA falls under 411.184. Re: Upcoming Class Help
interesting... i'll ask about suspensions/revocation of license... i also plan on asking about non-violent dispute resolution...
just to clarify, i searched for several different things like "wish they had covered'... "wish i had asked"... not to mention surfed through many threads out of those 12,334...
i'm really hoping (and wanting) to get the most out of this class... thanks for the advice so far...

Re: Upcoming Class Help
This makes for good discussion.
However, your instructor will probably have a set curriculum going in.
The usual response to questions from the class is "If we're going to cover this material in the allotted time, we need to move along" or something similar. (Of course, I don't know this, but that's how it's been in my four classes so far.)
I think you would do better to listen to recommendations for a good instructor who teaches what should be taught rather than thinking you are going to change what the average instructor is going to teach.
You've already found one of the best sources for good information right here.

Thanks for doing that.rokclimbertx wrote:just to clarify, i searched for several different things like "wish they had covered'... "wish i had asked"... not to mention surfed through many threads out of those 12,334...
Few people preface their questions that way; but the continuing controversies over "printing," invalid 30.06 signs, hospitals, amusement parks, whether you should carry after sniffing the cork of a wine bottle, etc., illustrate some widespread doubts.
I suspect most instructors do a good job of covering the material that is actually on the test.

Re: Upcoming Class Help
good points mike & seamus...
i may be over thinking the whole class thing and what (how much) i'll get out of it... certainly wasn't thinking of changing the instructor will teach... mostly just how to get the most from what's being taught...
no doubt this forum is full of great info regarding CHLs and i've followed, albeit quietly, many of the discussions on printing, signs, etc... and i'm very glad to have come across it...
thanks
