Stay outside city limits and check local county ordinances if you want to buy a piece of property large enough to target shoot or hunt.

+1 for Rockport area, very nice, very friendly. I have yet to meet a local LEO that is not pro CHL, we have a top-notch EMS service (not that I am biased) and several hospitals in the Corpus area that are great (3 top rated designated Hospitals for heart attacks, and 1designated for strokes). Several "retirement" geered centers in this area, and also a few ranges to pick from. Good luck with your choice.

My son lives in Austin and I am considering moving down that way
myself.

He had taken a ride to Bastrop and thought it was a nice little town.
I have not had a chance to see it.

Who knows a little something about Bastrop??

Plus, my rascally boy is of the opinion that the law in Williamson
County is full of problem children. That's the Round Rock area.
Are Williamson County LEO's cool with well-behaved CHL's?

Welcome Talonap. Texas is a wonderful place to live. I envy you, as you have your choice of areas to retire to. I don't envy you, as you have a wide choice to choose from!

From the piney woods of east Texas(beautiful, simply beautiful), to the arid semi-desert of far West Texas...to the beautiful areas of the Texas Gulf Coast, to the Great Plains areas. And the the Texas Hill Country is breath taking. What a choice to choose from.

Know one thing though. Everywhere in Texas, the winters are mild(what winter's the forum folks may say), but our summer's are hot, hot, hot! Some more so than others. And most areas are not immune to tornadoes.

You've heard all the rest.

If you like fishin', huntin', friendly neighbors and cheap rural livin', look to the Pineywoods of east Texas. Start with the Lake Fork area and move south to the city of Tyler (Pop. 100,000 +/-) and then go down to the Sam Rayburn Reservoir area. It's all mostly BYOB, but the more enlightened communities (Tyler excluded) have purveyors of adult beverages.

Neither Houston nor Dallas nor Shreveport are far (by Texas standards) from anywhere in east Texas.

Other than the summer heat and humidity, it's pretty much okay. But what the hey, in the summer you can always go visit your friends at GLTC.

West Texas - High Desert plains
Central Texas - (Austin & San Antonio) - Low land desert - think good the bad and the ugly
East Texas - Wannabe forest
South and South East - Coastal Plains

We have mild winters and hot sticky summers in East and South East Texas
Never been to West Texas in the summer but the winters are mild
Central Texas kills me in the summer as there is not enough humidity.

So you guessed it right, I am in the Houston area.

As you are retiring I would consider the area around Houston as we have a real large Medical Center.
Brazoria county, just south of Houston is REAL gun friendly.

I don't know that I would classify the Hill Country as "plains" but otherwise that seems pretty much right. The problem is where do you draw the lines that separate the Hill Country from the low plains?

Nearly all of Brazoria County is a class C hurricane evacuation zone or worse. Ike hit it pretty hard, even as far inland as Pearland. I wouldn't move to this area unless I really, really wanted to be near the Gulf.

My grandparents retired to New Braunfels and love it. Like was mentioned earlier...close to San Antonio and Austin, not as humid as Houston, no bad tornadoes like Dallas, and the hill country is beautiful!

Bastrop is a beautiful area. Lots of retired people in the area. I wouldn’t mind retiring there. Its not far from Austin/San Antonio. The area itself is just hilly enough to be scenic with tall pine and similar trees.

A cousin of mine and his wife and daughter moved from Michigan last year to Denison, near the Texas-Oklahoma border, to retire. He's an avid fisherman so being near the largest lake in Texas was a major selling point to him. The low cost of living compared to "up North" and no state tax were clinchers also.

The Sherman-Denison area is 45 minutes north of Dallas and has all the big city conveniences without a lot of the big city problems.

Welcome Talonap. +1 on the Sherman-Denison area. The towns aren't too large, but you still have all the emenities of the larger cities. Two hospitals, plenty of shopping areas for the wife. Plus the lakes are great if your into fishing. Lake Texoma offers all types of fishing, even the occasional walleye as I've seen brought to one of our bassclub weighins. And there is always Lake Ray Roberts for the big bass. Plenty of hunting oppurtunities from dove to pigs to deer. The weather can be Hot in the Summer, but mild with an occasional light snow in the Winter. For the most part, the tornadoes seem to stay just to the West and North of us. I haven't heard of any issues with the Leos and CHL'ers and there is a decent indoor range in Sherman and a cheap self service outdoor range close (10-15 mins away.)
