How do you teach 10 commandments?

#1

Post by thorkyl »

Here are my simple easy to remember rules that I teach and how i teach them.

1 - it is loaded even if its in pieces
---> take a 1911 apart with a snap cap in it - scares the crud out of them when the cap falls on the table

2 - do not point it at anything you do not want to kill
---> I then shoot a watermelon with the 1911 hallow point at 10 foot

3 - there is no such thing as a firearm accident
---> If you discharge it when you didn't mean to then YOU screwed up plain and simple

4 - be aware of all things behind your target
---> Looking down range through sights what color is the pie plate behind and to the right of the target?
---> Hint - its cammo

5 - Your safety is broken, don't trust it.
---> I give a left handed safety shotgun to a right handed shooter
---> 50% turn the safety off thinking they are turning it on

5 - Finger off trigger
---> they hate this one, I have a thumb tack glued to the trigger on the dummy gun
---> many a student asks for a band-aid or says ouch the bad ones do it multiple times

Hmmm interesting but I thought the 10 were

1) Every gun is loaded. Treat it that way
2) Even if it is unloaded, every gun is loaded
3) Don't ever, ever, ever point the holey end at anything you don't want to destroy.
4) All guns are loaded, just in case you forgot.
5) Always know what is behind your target as you may not be able to get the projectile to stop or you may not be as good a shot as you think.
6) See rule 1 & 2
7) Don't ever touch the bang switch until you are sure you have checked 3 & 5 are true.
8) When you are finished shooting see rule 2.
9) Thou shalt not monkey around with firearms, no beer, no drugs, no horseplay...it isn't big and it isn't clever.
10) Guns don't kill people, people who ignore these rules do

I try to keep it as simple as possible:

1. Treat every gun like it is loaded, all the time.
2. Never point you gun at anything you don't intend to destroy
3. Keep your finger off the trigger until the sights are aligned on the target.
4. Always be sure of your target and what's behind it.

I know it isn't ten, but it works very well as a way to keep it simple.

You're not a retired gunner's mate, are you? I'm the Weapons Officer at my unit and that's pretty much how I teach gun safety. Glad to see some others with common sense and K.I.S.S. approach. :cheers2:

I've been teaching the "simple" rules to my 4 year old grandson, in anticipation of his first trip to the range sometime next summer.

He's still learning...
Laws that forbid the carrying of arms...disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes... (Jefferson quoting Beccaria)

... tyrants accomplish their purposes ...by disarming the people, and making it an offense to keep arms. - Supreme Court Justice Joseph Story, 1840

What if anything are you using to teach the rule's "with" ?

I have a 4 year old and am wondering, how to go about it.

Modern airsoft guns look, and function almost exactly like the real thing. They can put out an eye too, but are generally not Fatal if a mistake is made. However, you WILL feel it.

Shame on me for not responding sooner.

My "dummy gun" is a water pistol
For rifle work I use an M1 carbine stock and a Red Ryder that I gutted gas piston out of and then filled the end of the barrel with a wood dowel.
