Just got my plastic!

#1

Post by Glock »

The wait is over... I finally got my plastic! I just found this forum about a week ago and have been checking out all of the posts and reading as much as I could. My first post is today and I am pretty excited to report my CHL has arrived. (got it in the mail about 10 min ago! :clapping:

Anyways I am looking forward to my first trip to the fair this weekend with my fiancee (who received her plastic yesterday!)

I will be carrying a Glock 22. She has a 38 special. I have been delaying going to the fair until it arrived since the area is not the best in DFW.. I wanted to thank everyone for being so professional and for sharing the experiences that they have gained and passing it on to us new guys.. I do have one question. Extra Ammo (clips). I am a big guy. 6'5 and I have no problem conceiling a large gun but is an extra mag of ammo really necessary? Gun holds 16 rounds total and I just wanted opinions if extra mags is something I should concider carrying with me! I appreciate any and all information and suggestions.

Thanks - GLOCK! :woohoo

Welcome!

Here is a place to start when it comes to "How many rounds should I carry?"

WELCOME !!!
I was just guessing by your user name what you might carry :biggrinjester:
I carry a Glock; I recommend if you change magazine baseplates, you look at Pearce Grip PG-39.

The Pearce Grip PG-39 baseplate allows 2 extra rounds in .40, or 3 extra rounds in 9mm ... where most +2 baseplates allow 2 in 9mm but only one in .40 and the PG39 actually is smaller or shorter than some other brand's baseplates that offer less capacity.

IMHO, No matter how fast you can become at changing magazines, It's easier to use the extra 2 or 3 in the mag with an extended baseplate, that to change mags if you only "need" 2 or 3 more rounds.

Still, I always carry 1 extra mag with me, sometimes more depending when and where I'm going.
(I try to carry enough extra mags on the opposite side of me than my gun so the weight doesn't cause me to walk in circles (my back hurts less with equal weight on each side) ;-)

So, I might have a 20 rounder in my Glock 26, and a couple more 20 rounders in my pockets and one or two in a mag holder. the extra weight helps me burn calories if I walk uphill.

The main reason for an extra magazine isn't round count. It's magazine failure. And yes, it can even happen to a Glock.

Thank you, that's exactly right.
Glad you mentioned
"The main reason for an extra magazine isn't round count. It's magazine failure. And yes, it can even happen to a Glock."
I intended to mention that, but forgot to. Yeah, it isn't that I think I'll need 61 rounds necessarily, but I might need 2 or 3 magazines. Sometimes I'll carry a 10, 12 or 13 rounder in the pistol bto reduce grip length for concealment purposes, and a 20 rounder in the holster's mag holder to keep it straight above belt-line because a holster only has one J-hook, another in a pocket for weight-equalization (back problems)

Didnt make the fair this weekend but I did attend Octoberfest in Southlake.. There was a ton of people and I want with my Glock 22. My Fiancee carried her Bodyguard 38. Her dad carried a Glock 22 and Her step-mother Carried a Bersa 380.

I was wearing a (hawaii) shirt. So was her dad.. My Fiancee and her step mother carried in purses.. I have changed my holster to IWB after this event because I feel more comfortable that it is hidden but it was not detected.. People were so packed in that I was careful not to brush by anyone..

I actually have carried 100% of the time since I got my Plastic friday (except work) Its in car when I am here in the office. I have had no issues. I am carrying an extra mag as well. and a flashlight / pocketknife..

Thanks again for all of the advice.. BTW! I did do the Wally Walk Friday Night however the fiancee didnt want to draw any added attention to us by taking pics so I have no pics.... Sorry

Hello ... welcome. I'm relatively new to this forum and have found it invaluable. I hope you do too. On the matter of extra magazines, I do carry an extra magazine for my Kimber CDPII. The Kimber holds 8 ... should be enough for just about all situations that I expect to survive. But, I sure don't ever want to have to say to myself: "drats ... I sure wish I had that extra magazine RIGHT NOW!". I use a High Noon Holsters magazine carrier ... it fits neatly on my left side under my shirt. Again ... congratulations! :woohoo
