chl, do you need ssn?
hi,
i'm just wondering if you NEED a ssn to obtain a chl,
i'm in the USA legally but i'm not allowed a ssn due to my visa only being an H-4, my wife is here working and i'm a bystander,
i just purchased a beretta px4 storm for in the house but being from the UK we aren't allowed pistols so i thought doing the chl would be good training even if i decided not to carry,
just wondered if a ssn is necessary,
thanks,
natt

The form says that the social security number is required persuant to Texas Family Code § 231.302 (c) (1), which concerns child support payments.
You might try calling DPS and asking if you can qualify. I don't know exactly what type of visa is required.

Go to the DPS CHL website and ask via email or call.texasnatt wrote:hi,

Your situation is outside my knowledge and experience. Are you familiar with this web site?

Please don't do anything rash.
Did you buy the pistol from an FFL dealer? If so, it sounds like you have the correct status to own a firearm under fedeal law. They usually err on the side of caution.
If you're not eligible for a CHL, you might want to look into the NRA Personal Protection in the Home course, or something similar.
[Later] You can defend yourself. For that matter, an illegal alien can legally defend himself.
As far as being legally permitted to own firearms, the U.S. probably has the most permissive laws for non-citizens in the world.

There is a type of SSN for those who can not work. The Social Security Cards for these numbers have something to the effect of "Not for employment." Where I work we have a large German Mennonite community which has people of every immigration status imaginable. We frequently find these cards when people are looking for work, unfortunately these people are either unwilling or unable to get their status changed so we can hire them.

The CHL class doesn't really teach you shooting skills, it's mostly a class in legal matters. I feel your pain, being an immigrant myself. It took me a long time to figure out that I CAN both purchase a firearms and get a CHL (of course, my residency status is different and I do have a SSN).
I'm sure you can obtain all the training you want, even if you are barred from a CHL.
