Actually, Taurus has been making Beretta 92's (called PT92) since Beretta won the contract with the US Government, who also bought in quantity from Taurus. It's as good as any other M9 on the market.
For a bit of history. At one time Taurus was a Beretta subsidary. Hence why they started off with imitation Beretta 92s-it what was on the assembly line. As Taurus has matured, its product line has evolved away from those clones to a full range of products (fair warning-I've heard both good and bad about Taurus).
Ah - that makes sense. It seemed like such a random gun to clone. I too have heard good and bad. With companies like that I usually stay a way and put my money towards established companies, even if it comes at a premium.

Example: Many of the guys at work purchased kel-tec 380s and 9s as BUGs while working. Since then, MOST of them have had to go back and purchase a more expensive and more reliable gun due to the kel tecs malfunctioning. I learned from their experience and purchased a Kahr right out the gate. The extra $200 +/- seemed well worth it to have to buy once.

[Thanks! What holster do you wear and at what position?"]Howdy! Unlike A.R. I know everything, and shoot better than anyone on this forum, maybe on the entire internet...
Just kidding!
I've never owned a Taurus auto, but I did trust their revolvers enough to protect my wife and children (she carried a Taurus 650 - a hammerless .357 revolver) until she "stole"
my Glock 27 from me a few years ago. Actually I convinced her to "study" and practice with it and it is now her daily carry.
I purchased my first Glock in the early '90s - when I worked in a small gun shop and the infamous Luby's incident went down.
Here's the deal (IMHO):
If it fits your hand comfortably, you can't go wrong with a Glock. As A.R. said, as long as the trigger is covered by the holster it's a safe as a good 'ol DAO revolver.
If I didn't feel that way my G30 (the compact doublestack .45) wouldn't spend all day being carried "inside my waistband".
The design has been around a lot longer than the Taurus and subjected to all kinds of silly "torture" tests.
(Dropped from an airplane, dragged by a truck, buried in mud...the list goes on and on - and so do the test Glocks)
I'm not knocking any other brands/makes here - just sharing what I know.
Study the mechanical workings of a Glock - notice there are actually three safetys.
When it comes down to the math remember that if you are happy with your initial purchase you'll probably have what ever you decide on for years and years (kind of like getting married - perhaps even more intimate depending on your choice of carry methods).
FYI - there are ranges that rent guns, be sure to try out your potential "mate" prior to buying.
Personally, I really like and trust Glocks. I hope you find something you can feel as comfortable with.
Be sure to let us know![/quote]

Yes. If you are in the Houston area, I could let you check out my carry setup. After much trial and error, I decided on a G36 in a Supertuck with a Wilderness Instructors belt. Works excellent for me. The 36s had some trouble back when they were first introduced, but current production models are getting great reviews. Mine has been flawless. The biggest knock on the 36 has always been capacity, but I am OK with 7 rounds of good old 45acp.

Bersa is the bane of my existence. The Wife absolutely loves hers (and it really is excellent). But with a .380 its so difficult to find sufficient ammo to feed properly. Sights are large and easy to use. Grip is nice. Recoil is minimal. Accuracy is good considering the size pistol we're talking about. Its just that ammo is such a pain right now.

I won't consider myself an expert and I am very new to this board.

I own two Taurus semi autos. The first one I have fired nearly 1000 rounds and not a single misfire. Not a single misfeed. Not a single jam. Not a single stove pipe. Nothing. Nada.

While I cannot speak to other brands, I went and bought a PT 140 as my carry gun. This is my second Taurus.

I do not have any complaints about Taurus. For the price it is definitely good. I might get more sophisticated later on, but as for now I am very happy with both guns....and plus there is a lifetime warranty on all Taurus guns.

I have nothing to complain about.

I also carry a Taurus PT140 PRO it has been flawless after I had Taurus send me a replacement mag release and spring. My regular rotation Includes Kahr CW40 by the way it also had a bum spring on the slide lock, and a Ruger SP101 3" can you tear up one other than firing unsafe high pressure hand loads. If'n you likes how she feels, she goes bang when told to, and hits where it's pointed at the cost has nothing to do with it. Each serves a purpose for me I like the extra capacity of the Taurus primary winter carry, the Kahr is extreamly concealable primary summer carry, and the Ruger because I still just love a wheelie.

Welcome to the TexasCHLForum Alamo5000. There are many happy Taurus owners on the forum and I am glad that you are one of them.

Welcome to the forum.

I'm with you on Taurus being a good value pistol.
Mine has over 1500 rounds through it and no issues at all.

I'm not an amateur gunsmith like some members here, so
a trouble free gun is of paramount importance to me.

You mentioned that your 2nd Taurus is a PT140.
What's your first Taurus semi-auto model?

WOW! Thanks everyone for the warm welcome. All us gun nuts sure are a friendly bunch "rlol"

First, I grew up shooting... A LOT. Mainly though it was shotguns... skeet fear me. I shot rifles occassionally but not a lot. I never owned a pistol though until a few months ago. I was in the gun store and I have always wanted a pistol. I read and researched and looked and thought about it for a long time actually...

Then I went to the gun shop and picked up probably 100 different pistols just looking for the right fit for my hand. My hands are not huge so sometimes the grips on those big 45's were too wide for me.

Finally I picked up and handled and Taurus 24/7 Pro DS .40. I like .40. Its my cal of choice. The 24/7 Pro DS felt really good and it was around 1/2 price of some of the other contenders. I figured with a warranty like they have and all that... this could be a very good start. Out came the credit card and I took it home.

I really liked the feel of the gun. Eventually when I win the lotto I will buy some other guns as well...and I will build an nice little addition on to the house for a nice gun room...and build myself an indoor gun range....but aside from all that...it has worked out very very well.

A little while later I decided to take my CHL class which I did (waiting on the DPS now)...and I figured I needed something a bit smaller if I am going to have it on my person...with .40 being my top choice of caliber I went shopping again. Before I went shopping the only thing I decided was that I wanted a .40. I was not biased although based on my 24/7 I had a good impression. I did the whole 9 yards again.

I left with a PT 140. Size of the weapon plus the capacity...and it was in my preferred caliber....there wasn't much else to even compare it to...if I was willing to go down to 9mm that would have made the choice a lot harder...

Of course there are numerous other types of guns I like as well (CZ comes to mind). My dad has a CZ and I really like it. But for price and overall performance and (so far) very good reliability...and of course the whole lifetime warranty thing... so far both guns have been great. At least 1000 plus rounds through the 24/7 and maybe 200 through the PT140 and we are still looking good.

Thanks for sharing about your Tauri.

I'm fairly familiar with the Taurus line and know what a 24/7 Pro is.

But what does the "DS" suffix signify?

As far as I have been able to research out it means "Decocker Safety" or "Decocker Standard". I am not sure which.

Apparently the previous models only have a safety on them. With mine though if you push the safety up, its on safety. If you continue to push it up one more notch it will click and decock the striker and then return to the safety position. You can decock the striker with a round in the chamber or not...

With my Millenium if one is in the chamber either A) you take it out of the chamber B) you put the safety on. With my 24/7 you have a third option C) decock the gun (and you can still have it on safety after that). After you decock it any trigger pull will have to be intentional. Its just dual action instead of single action due to the double striker thing Taurus does.

To be honest I would like to have the DS on my PT140 seeing how it will be my carry gun.
