A Round in the Chamber Carry?

I am 68 years old, in a wheel chair, cant outrun a 90 year old in a walker.
I have 5 years in Vietnam, with 25th Aviation Bn , and 11th Armored CAV.
Lets say I pulled a few triggers in my life time. Also 15 years as a Texas LEO, then
I lost my ability to walk due to something called R.S. Dystrophy.
I have 9 different pistols I carry, wardrobe issue, I make it a point,
painful though it is for me at times, to practice twice a week.
I know my weapons, and am aware of the awesome responsibility of having a loaded
handgun on my side. Be it a wheel gun or auto.
My autos I have round in chamber,all though I prefer my wheel guns most of the time.
Just me.

A very compelling argument to carry a round chambered! In a deadly force encounter, fractions of a second count when you are defending your life, and when things go seriously south in a hurry that fraction of a second may make the difference of coming out of the confrontation alive or dead.

to me It depends on the gun -- mine is DA semi auto with hard trigger pull and very easy to remove safety in a good holster (covers trigger well) so I carry it chambered and when I go to the range, every time I load to shoot, I start with the safety on so I get into the habit of _______ it off with my thumb before firing, hopefully with enough practice, it will not cost my any critical seconds ---but to me, its safer and better than needing to pull it out, rack the slide before firing and gives one more round on hand.

Or very good with tactical reloads. I carry a 1911 cocked and locked with 3 mags. I have carried 1911's off and on for about 35 years now. I have had a lot of firearms training including 6 Officer Survivor schools. I believe I am competent enough to make the tactical reloads. All guns run out of Ammo eventuallly. 8 rounds, 18 rounds, or 180 rounds sooner or later the gun runs empty.

I still believe a gun without a round in the chamber is just an empty gun. If I was uncomfortable with a round in the chamber I would just carry a revolver.
