Hi, I am very excited about moving to texas. I just retired from 30 years of military service. I have been carying with a permit for over 15 years. I do have a few questions about texas CHL. I would like to know if I can carry while picking up or dropping off my children from school, what is the penalty for carying in a posted area (other than federal), and what is the general attitude in the DFW area of the local law enforcement and the population concering Carying? Any other quick adivice that would be helpful is also appriciated. I have read all of the state sites, but until I take a texas class. I know thier are alot of local customs that are not always clear.
Thanks in advance, I will be a Texan before the end of October.

Welcome to Texas.
You can carry while dropping off or picking up your kids at school.
The penalty for carrying in a 30.06 posted area is a Class A misdemeanor, which is bad juju.
Carrying in an area prohbitied by PC 46.03 (schools, courthouses, etc.) is a felony.
I don't know about DFW. Haven't been there for decades.

Welcome to TexasCHLforum and to Texas. I too want to thank you for your service.
You can have your gun with you on school grounds, so long as you don't go into buildings, and as long as there isn't a school-sponsored activity ongoing on the grounds. (Ex. football practice, bank practice, etc.)

Bank practice at school?

I know you meant Band practice, but I couldn't resist a small jab.

Dallas proper is slightly iffy (Mayor Laura Miller is Bloomberg follower) but most of the rest of the DFW Area is gun friendly.

Except for that the mayor of Dallas isn't Laura Miller anymore...It's Tom Leppert.

AlaskaRescuer,
Welcome to the second largest state in the United States of America. What we lost in status for size, we more than make up in temperature.
Any idea where in Texas you may be headed? I'm sure that there is someone on this forum that can provide specifics regarding the local customs/attitudes.
While we may have slipped to #2, we are still a pretty big state and you will find that need to carry and attitude regarding varies significantly by location. Please don't interpret that statement to mean that I don't believe you should'nt carry full time, just that some situations demand it while others allow it.
Our state legislature has been very good about recognizing the advantages of concealed carry and have taken significant action in past years to ensure that people understand it is a right for most and not a privilege for only a restricted few.
It's a good place to carry and I will sleep better knowing you are on your way.

Thank you all, I am here and have taken my CHL Class, I am living in keller, and now I am in the waiting room. I really enjoy Texas with exception to the drivers. I have found many very unwilling to let you merge if you use a turn signal, I have even had a "big rig" intentinly keep me from merging. The funny part was a few miles down the road it was his turn to be bullied, Yes I did help him merg. You have a very frindly population, (off the highway). I am happy to be here as this will be my new home for many years to come. Thanks again for all of you help in getting me to the right place for my CHL. I hope to meet some of you someday.

P.S. I had to add the sun glasses. and I need to figure a new login name.

AlaskaRescuer,
Welcome to Texas! I clocked out of the military after 22 years; Texas (San Antonio, specifically) was the first place I had been stationed at that felt like "home," so here I stayed. Got my CHL asap (altho I had to wait 6 months back then).
Hadn't noticed problem with drivers (except no one seems to know why turn signals are put on cars

), but I transferred here from Saudi Arabia -- the traffic there makes anything I seen in CONUS look tame.
Best wishes to you!

They used to have some spectacular 1 car accidents over there. In the Desert some of the wrecks would stay on the side of the desert for months.

Welcome to Texas, Alaska,

I just had to do that.
DFW area LE agency attitudes toward CHL vary a lot, but most individual LEOs, in my experience, are supportive.
